Hi all,
I've been running Abyss for a while now, and my server recently became 24/7. I've had massive problems with my server after leaving it on for more than about 2 days. RAM usage gets really high, and the MySQL side of things seems to die, which gives Error 500 messages.
Any ideas how I can fix this? I don't run much on the server, and it has 512mb RAM, and the queries can't be that intensive (a tiny Invision Power Board and a MySQL News and Guestbook script, and that's about it)
I've heard about utilities that clear out the RAM, has anyone ever used these?

Buy more RAM is the only real solution.
I have 1.5gb of RAM and I can play GTA San Andreas on my server while having 10+ users on my IRC server and god knows how many on abyss. I dont recommend this though, only did this once =P
There are programs that try to boost your ram or something, just google "Boost my ram freeware" or something.

Can't buy more RAM cos 512mb is the limit (it's an old dual P2 server). I'll have a look at some utils.
BTW: I ran memtest86 to search for errors, and found none, but I get errors in windows after about 2days "the memory could not be read"

512MB RAM is enough memory for any server these days. Mine is 512MB and I have no problems. TRUSTpunk has 128MB (i think) and he has no problems.
A program called FreeRAM XP Pro can be downloaded to clear RAM. Its a good program and I used to use it when I only had 96MB RAM and 10MB left after booting. Remember not to clear too much though because it clears the DLL's from the memory sometimes causing the system to crash.
MonkeyNation, how come it takes so long to render your sig? Sometimes it can take 10 seconds and the server load is only a few %.

FreeRam XP Pro works VERY well, but, like the Inquisitor (I hope I spelled that right) said, it can clear dll files, so its wise not to use it to often.
I only use it when my computer is running slowly. I have 1 Gigabyte of Ram on my computer with Abyss, and I've never had a problem.
I have 512 Megabytes of ram on my other desktop, which I used to use Abyss on, and it worked fine on there as well. |

It takes a minimum of 2.5 seconds anyway, ill cut this when I can be bothered to rewrite it with wmi alone.
Do you mean shows 10 seconds generation time or 10 seconds to load? :S
Could be a lotta people on my server I suppose.

10 seconds to render. Thing is it seems to do it even when there is only 3% CPU load or something like that. I got one that was 12 seconds once but no higher.

CPU isnt random, so its probably RAM or something.

You should use Task Manager or another Windows tool/utility to determine which program is actually "eating" all this RAM. We're sure that it could not be Abyss Web Server, but you cannot also know if it is MySQL. May be there is another application that is also running and that has memory leaks and which is causing all this trouble.
If you find that it is MySQL which is generating all this load, you should probably start by tweaking its configuration to restrict it to an acceptable RAM usage.
