can abyss be run, and configured, without a gui/desktop on freebsd?

Abyss is a GUI less server, its front end as you put it is merely a web interface to configure the server. A GUI is a program, not a web interface.
You dont need anything open to keep it running as a service, that is what you do when you install it, tell it to install as a system service. |
