I'm a newbie at this so bear with me:

How do you get a www.your-name.com instead of the ugly 111.111.111.111 thing? Do you have to register it or something or can you setup using Abyess?

Thanks!

www.dyndns.org and sign up for an account, its free unless you prefer to pay.

You then when your account is activated try to get a domain name, you have various types, if your IP address is static, you may get away with just using the webhop URL service, this can be cloaked so that only your URL is visible or as a redirect where your IP address and URL will be visible in the addressbar.

theirs other services, if you IP address changes, your better off with the dyndn.org service because it updates faster than the no-ip service.

if you want a domain, I can get you a yourname.info for free, and point it towards your ip.

or, you can purchase a domain, from register.com, or a domain registry site, and set up a Name servers http://www.zoneedit.com/ and point domains at the name servers, then easily updateable . and voila.

wat senshi, suggested isnt a domain, its a subdomain.

dyndns updates instantly, ni-ip does not update instantly the IP changes at your machine, also no-ip has issues if your ISP has put you behind its proxyservers like in my case, something they dont tell people but no-ip.com wont reolve my true IP address, dyndns has no issues in that respect.

You can buy your domain through dyndns if you read in the website, it will tell you how. I have tried a few DNS soloutions and this one really does work well.

What you have to do is fairly simple.

1. you need an account, this is what will identify you and your DNS to the www.dyndns.org servers.

The account is a login, username and password, THIS IS THE IMPORTANT ONE...make sure your login and password are secure, if you dont understand about secure passwords, simply dont make it a name or human readable form but make your password memorable, your login should be same, something that only you can remember.

When you have completed the sign up process you will need to follow the instruction in the email they send you to confirm your account and activate it.

2. DNS, this is your name that you choose, you have to goto www.dyndns.org and log in with your usernam and password.

navigate to your account via the accounts tab and create a new Dynamic DNS, select a domain and make up a name without the www. part. eg myDNS.mine.nu can be accessed by http://myDNS.mine.nu

You will need to update the DNS with your current IP address to get things rolling.

Your now set. The final part requires software, your IP could change without notice, a DNS IP updater like the kana soloution one is really good, this detects your machine IP and updates your DNS accounts automatically.

After you have sat down and looked at how it works, you will see just how simple it really all is.

Webhop.

This is useful as a cloak to mask your dnsname.

the webhop is accessable as a www. address madeup of a URLname.webhop.net or similar, users can access it via that name or via www.URLname.webhop.net

The UR can be a simple redirection where your true IPaddress ends up in the Browser bar or as a cloaked service where the URL is your www.URLname.webhop.net address, this carries a pop up advert for the dyndns service, something that can be removed if you pay roe a premium service.
