If you Abyss Web Server is installed a Windows PC, like mine, all you should have to do is enable sharing on the hosing PC (either the whole drive or just the Abyss folder).
You should be able to then just the PC name of the Windows network to get to your Abyss Server. IE: http://MYPCNAME/ or the actual IP address that PD uses on your netowrk. Windows has good help files for setting up shares and PC Naming.
If you're having address problems I would suggest giving the Abyss Server PC a static IP Address on your network. Then you can use your network LAN address to get to your Abyss Server (IE: 192 168.1.100 - subnet 255.255.255.0) |
i have made the abyss webserver shared how do i make so that ppl on the net can view my site? how can i test it so that i will work? or know that it will work? |

To access the server from the outside, people should use your router's WAN
IP (or external IP). It is the IP assigned to it by your ISP. This WAN IP
can be known by browsing http://www.aprelium.com/ip from your computer. If
you have a router, you must configure it to forward incoming requests to the
web port to your computer so that Abyss Web Server can respond to them.
If your WAN IP changes often, You'll need to use the services of a free DNS
provider that can track those IP changes and give you a DNS name. We suggest
looking at http://www.dyndns.org or at
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Internet/Servers/Address_Management/Dynamic_DNS_Services/?tc=1 .
This way, you'll always access your server using an address like
http://www.yourserver.freednsprovider.com without paying attention to IP
changes.
If you have problems to make your server reachable from the outside, we
recommend reading http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/faq.html#A1-2 .
Note that if you are using Windows XP, you must correctly configure its
internal Firewall: open the control panel, select the Networking section and
open the properties of your network interface. Select the Advanced Tab and
press the Parameters button (it should be in the bottom of the page). This
button will open a dialog where you can allow incoming connection to some
ports. If Abyss Web Server uses port 80, check the Web Server (HTTP) line.
If it uses another port, press Add... and enter the number of the port Abyss
uses as the internal port (select TCP and fill the other parameters
following the descriptions).

The firewall and/or router needs to have the NAT configured so that port 80 (or whatever u use) is accessible to the outside.

This is misleading, you don't need sharing to have this. You don't even need 'Client for Microsoft Networks' - you just need TCP/IP. Simply go to the connection's properties (right-click Network Neighbourhood in 9x and goto properties), then open the properties for the TCP/IP component. In that window, go to the DNS Configuration tab. Enable DNS, then fill the entries accordingly :
HOST : Servername
Domain : NT Domain
This results in servername.domain, which is then accessible via http://servername under 9x/NT4 or http://servername.domain in 2K onwards, depending on the configuration.
As I mentioned earlier, all that remains is to open up port 80 on the router (AND 9999 if you want to access admin from outside), then forward that port to your machine.
In my LAN(1), I have my speedstream 5660 forwarding all requests for port and some others to the machine whose IP address is 10.0.0.2.
All LAN machines use this site as the homepage.
(1) http://stone-d.dyndns.org/ (NOT Abyss at the moment, if you're wondering). Yes, I know its slow. It is mainly used for mail only and is used to host a second web on http://tbisetiabudi.dyndns.org/ AND webmail at port 8000.
