I feel odd posting a whole new thread about this, but I have recommended Mercury Mail Server to so many people, I feel I must tell what has happened to me with this program.
Mercury Mail Server, also known as Mercury/32, is a freeware mail server designed by the same people who developed the Pegasus Mail Client (available at www.pmail.com).
First, an overview of Mercury/32: When you first download it, it may seem a little archaic at first. (Besides the fact that it supports; and even recommends Novell NetWare). The features are also archaic, and require someone to be at the console to set anything up.
Second, the problem I feel most important: Mercury/32 simply has some trouble delivering mail to different domains. I have found that I am not able to send mail to both AOL and Cox Communications domains; which is unacceptable.
Some other problems: You can only have one domain; have to manually add users; cannot bind to an IP; and other miscellaneous things I forget. Also, if you don't configure it just right, it will be an open relay (VERY BAD).
Some good points: Very rock solid, and basically easy to use. But that's pretty much it.
So why have I been recommending it? Well I haven't found another really good email server; so I just disregarded all of the issues and lived with them; until now. I recently tried Merak Mail Server. I have tried it before, but had some relay issues. Now I try it, and everything works beautiful. I am not going to go in detail about it; but it is a lot better than Mercury/32. Only problem is; it isn't free.
This doesn't mean go out and get Merak; it means just don't use Mercury/32. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

most of these have restrictions, there is other software around that is opensource and do not have restrictions, with exception of mail enable which only has web mail restrictions. Everything in it is fair game. _________________ living in an armish paradise.....no gates here!

Which one of those had a restriction? I looked, and they all seemed fine to me... _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Well 5MB is ample space; it's more than the size of an MP3 at 128Kbps. I could squeeze 333 pictures at 15KB each.
Besides, most email clients block .exe attachments anyway. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

Hi,
I too have tried Mercury/32 and gave up on it. I found it difficult to set up and the control panel was very confusing.
I've tried MailEnable and really liked it, but I'm looking for something that has a Webmail option - for free - as well.
So I'm using ArgoSoft Mail Server on a Trial basis, and I like it, it's easy to use, but the controls are limited, but you do have unlimited users and user sign up as well, which is important to me. There are limited features and redesigning the pages are difficult if you don't know the code language.
Then I recently found DeskNow, which is my favourite so far and has many very kewl features, BUT no user sign-up. But there is a free version that offers unlimited users, and has a built in forum as well, and can act as a file storage server too, and an email server. The pro version even offers WAP support.
So now I'm wondering if there might be a free script somewhere that I can have users sign themselves up with, that might interact with DeskNow. I don't really know anything about scripts, except they are used at work to run certain tasks, usually when we're not there. So something simple for a simpleton like me would be awesome.
Anyone have a suggestion or another server option or Win XP? |

One day I went to the mailenable webiste and downloaded the Enterprise Edition of mailenable. And no its not a trial cause its been past 30 days. Could it just be I visited their site on a day where the tech guy goofed? Note its still there O.o? _________________

I read through the terms and stuff, and they say that if you go past the 30 days, the Pro and Enterprise edition just revert to the Standard edition which is free anyway. Supposedly the advanced features just stop working. |

If your mail server does not have webmail but does support IMAP, you can get Squirrelmail - http://squirrelmail.org/. It's not too complicated to set up. You must have WinXP, though. Win98 won't work with it. This may be a PHP issue. _________________ Stephen

hMail is the server, not a client to retreive the mail, which SquirrelMail is. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
