Hi again guys,
Another question about abyss. When I leave the server running for a while and I have people visiting the server, my hard drive fills up quite quickly (eg when I woke up this morning, I had 124mg left on the drive and I had a msg screen saying "hard drive full. Shut down programs to free up space") and I have to restart the server machine to get things going again. Currently my server machine only has a 5 gig hard drive (am getting a 30 gigger next week) but is this "normal" and is there a way of controlling it so it doesnt get out of hand??
Am using mac OS X.3 with the latest version of abyss _________________ http://www.tristanforsyth.com |

its not a memory leak.
You set in settings to start to use virtual ram from hard disk space, either reduce that virtual ram or get more ram. |

Mandy- how do you set virtual memory in panther? (havenot had to do it since os 9:) )
the laptop has 320 meg of ram (it was my old workstation and I just swapped out the drives) but the issue of virtual memory is an interesting one. Apparently there is a "flaw" in panther that can eat up disk space or something (did a search on google using "virtual memory+os x") by using swap files but maxoshints recommends that you dont mess with the swap files by allocating or deleting..............
Might wait till I get the 30 gig drive and downgrade to 10.2.......
Any other ideas would be appreciated _________________ http://www.tristanforsyth.com |

10.3 is very unstable in my opinion, I like 9 for some reason ( I had a uptime record of 201 days with a comp running it and a diff server software :D) yea, Id stick to 10.2, Plus, whats the CPU on your comp?
O.o
Im just shocked, that you have a very VERY small hard drive with such ram and such a os that need good resources. |

LOL- it was my work laptop. The 5 gig was my original drive size but I upgraded both the drive and the RAM. When I got the ibook, I swapped out the drives, put the drive in a firewire case and hooked it off my desktop. The firewire drive died very suddenly last week so I bought a new drive to put in the case but I will now put that drive in the laptop and put the 5gig in the case (does that make sense?)
The CPU on the laptop is a G3 running at 400mhz (the pismo model powerbook)
Have to wait til next week I guess when the drive turns up.....
BTW: I think I may have worked out the mail server issue. Im going to try he buit in mail server in X............. hope it works!! _________________ http://www.tristanforsyth.com |

tristanforsyth,
We can say that there is a little chance that the memory leak comes from Abyss. We've pushed it to the limits with up to 600 request per second for a whole day and no leak was found.
Anyway, we recommend that you run your process viewer and have a look on it from time to time to see "who's eating" your virtual memory memory. _________________ Support Team

Thanks again aprielium.
I actually ran a program called ipulse and found out that there was a program running in the background that I didnt even know that was running that was chewing up virtual memory (about 695 meg of VM) It was a small program to report my IP that I used back when I had a dynamic IP (ithought I had gotten rid of it but there was still a small part of he prog running!!)
Thanks again to Foxy (!) for her suggestion re the virtual memory......... damnn she's smart!!!
Hopefully things are OK now but I am going to try and restart the server machine each day (as soon as I can work out the automatic reboot thing to save me having to manually do it!)
Thanks again guys (and girls), you all rule![/i] _________________ http://www.tristanforsyth.com |
