|
|
Hello, I recently setup an abyss server, installed and configured php (+gd), got my dynamic dns working, setup permissions in windows and a few other things, I must say this program was by far the easiest part of the process! I really like the software and so far it has worked great, I have three small questions about it:
1. Is there a way to hide the tray icon? I tried the documentation but didnt see anything about hiding it.
2. In my task manager I see two different instances of abyssws.exe, one using ~200k and the other using ~600 (until the site is visited that is). Have I set something up wrong or are there supposed to be two instances?
3. Is there a way to close the configuration port? When I run a portscan on my system it shows the configuration port as open, but now that my server is set up I pretty much dont need it.
I must say this software has been great so far, thank you very much! |

Not without third party software. I believe if you run the server as a service using FireDaemon the icon will not show. There's a tutorial for this in the tutorials section.

No. If you turned it off and the server stopped working, how would you turn it back on to fix it ? Open ports are not a problem if the service running on them is secure. Make sure you have a secure administrator username and password. If you're behind a router it will not be accessible from the internet without port forwarding, on a LAN or if you're not behind a router you can block access from other machines using a personal firewall, e.g. www.kerio.com |

I have a question , you know on winXP where it shows the send error report
when a program needs to close , will abyss still launch a new process when
that window appears ? :?

if you have xp you can right click on the taskbar, hit properties, click customize, and click always hide on abyss
this will only hide abyss web server until you click the little arrow on the taskbar _________________ How many forum members does it takes to change a light bulb? |

Yes, I believe that is a problem. When I used to run my server on an old 98 machine, Abyss crashed once (oh my god!). Although this was not the version that included this crash protection feature, 98 still came up with a box (similar to the XP one, but without the error report feature) saying that Abyss needed to close. I think that until the "OK" button is hit (which is the "Don't Send" button now on XP), the server will not restart.
But please Aprelium, correct me if I am wrong. _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I just now thought of this question and
I would like to know if crash protection
really does work on winXP. :?
Edit: I have e-mailed Aprelium about this.

Well let's be thankful that due to Abyss' small size, a crash never has to be experienced.
Please note: The computer my server used to run on (where Abyss crashed) happened to be running a 200MHz processor with 32MB of Ram... _________________ Bienvenidos! |

I some how created a screen shot of the error that
would show up , now abyss did not crash. I some
how closed it during start up while it was loading
and it forced this error after hitting end task.
Edit: Image no longer exists on the Web Server , this is old.
You might see a different message if this happened during a
crash , this is just what the window will look like if it did crash.

"You chose to close an unresponsive program" is not the same as "... has caused an error and will be closed." |

Trust didn't say it was the crash window, he just said the window would look similar to this (on XP). _________________ Bienvenidos!

Abyss disables Widnows' default error handlers (so you won't see the usual dialog boxes).
When a crash occurs, it dumps a report in a file called crashrep.txt and exits. The second process launches another instance of the server. _________________ Support Team
