I'm having some hardware problems with my server, and I realize that this may not be the best place to discuss it, and I apologize, but it sems like the people here will be able to help me.
I do a lot of my work at school, and one of the main functions of my server is to hold files I work on at home, so I can access them at school. And I load a lot of these files from CD's (as well as the movies and TV shows)
Recently I've been having problems copying files from CD onto my HD... I usually just drag-and-drop, and up until a few days ago, it worked. But now when I start copying something, windows opens the 'copying...' window and it appears to be going fine, and then about 2/3 of the way through the copy, I get a 'cannot read from specified device' error. This happens in both my CD drives. (regular and CD/RW) I thought maybe there was a communications error, like, you know, an IDE cable was out pf place or broken or something. I opened up the tower and checked all that, but that wasn't it. So then I tried looking through the windows device manager to see if maybe the problem was internal. I couldnt come up with anything IDE related, but I also noticed that my 'PCI communications device' didnt have a driver. I tried to load one from my windows cd, but no luck.
Now I don't think PCI and IDE are related, as far as communications with the motherboard/HD goes, but I could be wrong. (I'm not a bug hardware buff) If anyone knows what that problem may be, and where I can find a solution (I realize this topic isnt really apropriate for a server forum, but like I said, people here seem to know their stuff.) Any help would be greatly appreciated (as always)
My two drives are an 8x CD-ROM and a phillips 8x write/24x read CD-R/RW drive.
Thanks a lot. |
