Moxxnixx, I still have questions for you..
When i did URL cloaking on cjb.net, I used an html script to prevent popups because it cannot be enabled without popups. This prevented URL cloaking from happening (the IP showed in the address bar). My website is http://vnar.cjb.net:81 and I want to make it http://vnar.cjb.net instead. My IP shows instead of http://vnar.cjb.net . Any ideas how to fix this? _________________ Vijay Narayanan

If you are hosting the site yourself, get a Dynamic DNS service - much much better than a redirector (cjb etc).
After signup, you are assigned a sub-domain name (like how cjb works).
Alternatively, just BUY a real domain (sheesh, they are only US$5 or so per year, check www.godaddy.com) - then point that domain's DNS to the Dynamic DNS service. That way you have your OWN domain, rather than a wierd-looking sub-domain. Some DynDNS services charge you for doing this with your own domain, but many don't.
In either case, you then run a small app (termed a Client) in your taskbar that tells the DNS host what your current IP is. When ppl request your site, the browser is told of your IP but since it is done in the DNS entries, the IP never shows no matter what !
The difference between a DNS service and a Redirector is that all requests come thru as TRUE requests to your server - there is no frames hiding the actual paths, no adverts. Users can navigate freely thru your directory structure and they see the "real" paths of all pages in their browser.
There are heaps of free DynamicDNS services out there, from what I have found all are very reliable. You MUST however get the matching Client for whatever service you choose - these will be available from the webpage of host you choose.
--------------
A third way is to buy a domain, then use a free DNS service like www.mydomain.com to point it to your IP. You can set it up either to work like cjb (with redirection) or you can point to an IP. This is even better than a DynamicDNS service if you have a static IP.
The reason for using a DynDNS service is that each time your IP changes (if applicable) you have to go and update the DNS - the DynDNS services use the little "Client" thing to do that for you automatically, whilst a true DNS service requires you to do it manually yourself. Also, the DynDNS services tend to update faster (in seconds) whilst real DNS takes a lot longer to propogate over the WWW (so if IP changes, your site will not be found for a few hours)
Hope that help - JC |

Additional info, better explained that I did above - Read this page :
http://zoneedit.com/doc/dynamic.html
Steps to impliment REAL domain -->> your server
1. Buy a domain, find the cheapest, don't worry about "features" - you should not pay more than $9 per year, for *.biz you should pay under $6 if you get a long lease (say 5 yrs)
2. Sign up with ZoneEdit
3. Go to site where you bought domain, use their domain management tools to set DNS of the domain to ZoneEdit's DNS servers.
4. Get the Client for ZoneEdit, install and configure it
5. Run Client as a service (or in tray on Win9x) at all times
6. Tell people to visit your new domain !
It will take 24-48hrs to get the domain "visible" (after step1) but all you'll get is a holding page (almost all registrars "park" the domain for you automatically until you change the DNS entries).
You don't need to wait until this happens to do steps 2 and 3 - and there will be abot 24hr delay after doing step 3 before the DNS propogates and the ZoneEdit settings become active. Some useres will see it faster, some will be slower (it depends on their ISP)
So, if you do 1,2,3 all in one day, the new site will usually be visible the next day, or possibly the day after that. I recently bought 4 domains from www.godaddy.com and they were alive in 18hrs. I waited until they were visible before I changed DNS - the changes became effective about 12 hours after that - so it took me 36 hrs to get mine alive and working.
Once you have your new domain running - then go to cjb and set "Cloaking" to OFF - and redirect it to your new domain rather than your IP. Then ppl who use your old cjb addie will see your new domain.

BTW you can avoid all that bs he just told you to do by signing up with no-ip...i bought http://quartermoon.info there and it was up in 5 minutes, though the price is a harsh 39.90 for two years, you avoid all of that ignorant backwash from godaddy. |
Hardly BS if it saves you the $40 you're moaning about. The ZoneEdit service for using your domain name is free, the No-IP one only provides a subdomain of their domain for free. No contest. |

GoDaddy is the biggest Domain Registrar for a very good reason - they are cheap - I never had any problem with them, and I've regged a few hundred thru there... At NO POINT does GoDaddy require that you host with them - they might offer hosting, but it's not an obligation !
Anyway, I mentioned godaddy simply because it was the first that came to mind - as I specifically said in my post "buy on PRICE", coz it is the DNS service that is important, not who you buy the domain through ! Don't buy from Godayy - buy from the cheapest registrar you can find. Alternatively, pay $30 for 2 years if you want, I don't care
IMO there was no BS in my post - sorry if you took offence to my attempt to help ANOTHER USER of this forum who had a specific problem that other people did not help much with... at some point ppl realise that using redirectors is *never* going to be as good as buying a domain and managing the DNS yourself - some ppl just learn slower than others I guess ?
There are some very odd people out there in the world, and I think Karasu Kami might just be one of them :)

JohnC,
I totally agree with you. This forum is meant to "HELP" people that are new to web servers and web building.
NOT ridicule them for making small mistakes. Nobody's perfect. Evil people, GO AWAY !!!
People don't need to be insulted if they go with a service that you don't agree with.
Anyway, I got my domain address from Namecheap.com and they have excellent customer support.
I had no problems setting it up for my server and it's only $8.88 a year. They even accept paypal.
Auf Wiedersehen, |
