I was able to demonstrate a local access:
Data entered into Safari browser address or URL field:
http://127.0.0.1:8000/pwrabyss.gif
Here is where I expected to see the "Powered by Abyss Web Server" gif
Result:
But I have not been able to demonstrate a remote access across the Internet; i.e.:
Data entered into Internet-Explorer browser address or URL field:
http://192.168.123.254:8000/pwrabyss.gif
Here is where I expected to see the "Powered by Abyss Web Server" gif
Result:
Error message from Windows/Internet-Explorer
Hardware: Mac 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4.11
Internet access method: DSL
I downloaded X1 and copied the Abyss Web Server folder into our Mac applications folder.
I thought that the first easy test would be to demonstrate access of the file pwrabyss.gif by entering URL data into the address or URL field of the Web browser. First, a local access. Then a remote access from another computer outside of our LAN, using our router IP.
I expected to see the Abyss Web Server icon.
I didn't obtain the results that I expected.
Is there enough information in this post that you could troubleshoot this and tell me what it means and what changes I need to make?
Thank you for your patience.

Your screenshot shows that you have your external IP listed.
That should be your internal IP (it starts with 192.168.......). |

Would I have to disable MAC Filter to make the Abyss Web Server software work properly?
We have some MAC filters set up in our router that enable only a few devices. |

Please try Moxxnixx's internal IP resolution first. Barring that, you may also want to disable MAC filtering if you do not necessarily need to limit which devices need access to which services at this point in time.
You might also want to make sure if the IP address 192.168.123.254 is really bound to the machine which has the Abyss webserver running. I am not so sure how this is done on a Mac OS X, but on XP, it's simply a matter of typing "ipconfig" in a DOS console and checking its results. _________________

I'd like to recap..
I've been able to demonstrate a local file access on my own Mac:
URL (local) http://127.0.0.1:8000/pwrabyss.gif entered into Safari browser.
Here is where I expected to see the "Powered by Abyss Web Server" gif
Result:
But I have not been able to demonstrate a remote file access across the Internet; i.e.:
http://71.138.140.18:8000/pwrabyss.gif
URL (remote) http://71..pwrabyss.gif entered into Safari on my own (Mac) computer:
"server stopped responding" message from Safari
or "cannot connect to server" (sometimes it's this result)
URL (remote) http://71..pwrabyss.gif entered into Internet-Explorer on a remote Windows PC:
General networking error message from Internet-Explorer
Local hardware: Mac 1.66 GHz Intel Core Duo connected to U.S. Robotics USR8054 Router
Local operating system: Mac OS X 10.4.11
Local internet access method: DSL
I downloaded X1 and copied the Abyss Web Server folder into our Mac applications folder.
I thought that the first easy test would be to demonstrate access of the file pwrabyss.gif by entering URL data into the address or URL field of the Web browser. First, a local access. Then a remote access from another computer outside of our LAN, using our router IP.

First of all, please remove from your post the image where you display your MAC addresses captioned Router display: MAC Filter table. You are exposing the MAC addresses of you machines to the whole world and that would defeat the purpose of trying to filter traffic by MAC addresses. I am telling you this due to the fact that MAC addresses can be spoofed.
You also need to figure out the LAN IP address of the PC where your Abyss runs. The IP mentioned, 192.168.123.254, points to the LAN IP of your router and not your intended webserver. This is my understanding of your posted photo captioned Router display: IP address data. Please edit the image of this posting too and blur out or remove all the MAC addresses displayed there.
If you really believe that 192.168.123.254 is the right LAN IP address of your webserver, and if this works:
http://127.0.0.1:8000/pwrabyss.gif
then this should work too.
http://192.168.123.254:8000/pwrabyss.gif
Therefore, you really have to figure out the actual LAN IP address of your webserver first. Once you figure that out, you can fill in the blanks below and will then be able to see that it properly resolves:
http://192.168.X.Y:8000/pwrabyss.gif
X=?
Y=?
There is also a device feature called loopback. If your router supports loopback, it would be able to know how to handle LAN-based requests for 71.138.136.63 - your WAN IP. If your router doesn't support loopback, it wouldn't be able to properly resolve LAN-based requests for 71.138.136.63. Surprisingly, not all modern routers support this loopback feature. Loopback enables you to see, from your own LAN, the intended result for:
http://71.138.136.63:8000/pwrabyss.gif
assuming you have also correctly updated your port forwarding settings, i.e., Router display: Virtual Server table. _________________

The Aprelium Website "Your IP Address" is now showing me..
71.138.136.63
A few days back that IP was different.. started with 71 but the rest of it was different. I posted that one here a few days back.
Router display: Virtual Server table. Shows how I implemented "port forwarding". Select ("click") image to enlarge.
We have some MAC filters set that permit a few local devices here, including a laptop PC. So we selected "Only allow PCs with MAC listed below to access device and internet" from the MAC filter options.
Some parameters from my Router display, Device Information..
WAN/Connection: PPPoE Connected
WAN/IP: 71.138.136.63
WAN/Subnet Mask: 255.0.0
WAN/Default Gateway: 71.138.136.63
LAN/IP Address: 192.168.123.254
LAN/Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
LAN/DHCP Server: Enabled
I went to an Internet cafe to test remote file access from a Windows PC. When I tried to access..
http://192.168.123.254:8000/pwrabyss.gif
..with the IE browser, the result was:
IE waiting, several seconds went by, then "IE cannot display the webpage". There was no other useful information (that I could find).
When I tried to access..
http://71.138.136.63:8000/pwrabyss.gif
..with the IE browser, the result was immediate (no waiting):
"IE cannot display the webpage". Again, there was no other useful information (that I could find).
I don't know what a next step would be. |

Your new WAN IP address 71.138.136.63 was assigned to you by your ISP after any of the following conditions have been met:
1. Your ISP has forcefully reset it.
2. Your router has temporarily lost connection to your ISP and when it connected again, it was assigned a new WAN IP by your ISP.
Internet subscription packages differ and, from what I gather here, you are subscribed to one which gives you a dynamic WAN IP. Dynamic WAN IPs are leased for your use by your ISP for a variable amount of time. Your leased WAN IP normally changes as your router gets disconnected from and reconnects again to the Internet.
You are confusing WAN IP with LAN IP. IP addresses that start with 192.168... are Class C LAN IPs. From an Internet cafe, you will not be able to reach your home PC using http://192.168.123.254:8000/pwrabyss.gif. Your WAN IP is currently 71.138.136.63 so you should use that instead and browse to http://71.138.136.63:8000/pwrabyss.gif whenever you're outside your LAN.
Your next step remains - to figure out the LAN IP address of your webserver at home. _________________

This question comes up a LOT! Let's get everything solved in an efficient manner.
1. Make sure of your server's internal IP address. (WinXP Run 'cmd' and type in 'ipconfig').
*Access http://127.0.0.1/pwrabyss.gif from the server. This address will ONLY work on the server.
*Access http://192.168.123.254/pwrabyss.gif (unless server IP changed) from a computer on your LAN.
If both of the above work, Abyss and your server computer are working great.
2. Check the port forwarding table. Port 8000 TCP to server's internal IP.
(From your screenshot above, that looks correct)
*Access http://71.138.136.63:8000/pwrabyss.gif from your LAN. If this works, port forwarding is set up correctly. But make sure that's your current WAN IP address. You can tell from the picture below my reply what your IP address is.
PS If step 2 doesn't work, try step 3 anyways.
3. Access http://71.138.136.63:8000/pwrabyss.gif from another internet connection. _________________ Stephen

I've got this all straightened out; here's how it breaks down:
router IP:
192.168.123.254
server LAN IP as displayed by Mac OS X System Preferences, Networking, TCP/IP panel; this is the IP that goes into the router port forwarding table for the port (I selected 8000) used by the Abyss Web Server:
192.168.123.100
server WAN IP (allows remote access):
71.138.138.152
My objective is to post links (URLs) on message boards that remote users can use to retrieve files on my hard disk.
Since the server WAN IP changes every few days, I guess the next step will be to establish a domain name.
Thanks to Moxxnixx, loloyd and pkSML for your assistance. |

192.168.123.100 - you finally nailed the LAN IP address of your webserver! congrats on your new toy. may you have long fun-filled times with it. :-D
pkSML mentioned dyndns.com's services. my router actually supports an auto-update of WAN IP when it gets changed by my ISP from dyndns.com! this is a cool thing to have. check if your router supports a similar feature as well. the only limitation to this is that you can only:
1. use dyndns.com's free subdomains.
2. buy a domain from dyndns.com (which is not the cheapest) and use that.
the above mentioned dynamic dns to IP updater is hardware-based. the other option is to use software-based updaters like the one mentioned by pkSML. _________________
