Posted: Mon Feb 10, 2003 5:47 pm Post subject: Guide: How to Install phpBB2 |
|
|
Introduction
phpBB2 is a superb forum application which is extremely powerful and
very popular... You can find out more about phpBB2 by going to the
following address http://www.phpbb.com
Requirements
1. Abyss Web Server
2. phpBB2
3. WinZIP
4. PHP 4.3.X
5. MySQL
6. phpMyAdmin
Post Installation
1. Make sure Abyss is running without problems.
2. Make sure php is configured correctly otherwise go here:
http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php.html
3. Make sure MySQL is installed and running. If you do not have
it go here: http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1070
4. phpMyAdmin is not really needed but its definitely worth its
wieght in gold. This little gem will help you administrate your
databases using a GUI, otherwise its all commandline and is not
supported in this guide. You can quickly install it following this
link to the guide: http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1071
Installation Steps
1. Using phpMyAdmin create a database and name it phpbb2data
2. Unzip phpBB-2.0.4 and go one level deep... Drag, copy or
move the phpBB2 directory into your htdocs directory
Please Note:
You have to make sure the public can access your server. You have to
know your IP address. It has to be static and not dynamic. If you have
a dynamic address you can try http://www.dyndns.org for a solution. In
the end the phpBB setup needs a static address to work. If you use a
port you will have to add it to the end of your address. Please keep
this note in mind.
3. Depending on where you located your phpbb2 files depends on
how you access it. If you did as according to this guide then you
would access the install page like this:
http://yourIP/phpbb2/install/install.php
4. Database Type: = Do you have MySQl 3 or 4? Choose here.
5. Database Configuration
a.) Database Server Hostname / DSN: = localhost
b.) Your Database Name: = phpbb2data
c.) Database Username: = Did you change the name of any users
in MySQL? If not input "root" without the quotes...
d.) Database Password: = Did you password protect your root
user? If you did input that password here...
e.) Prefix for tables in database: = Do not touch this - It
should be "phpbb_" and it is correct...
Admin Configuration
a.) Domain Name: = Enter your static address. Dynamic
IPs cause problems.
b.) Server Port: = If you're using one it should automaticaly
display, other wise input it here.
Everything else is pretty self explanatory, finish your installation,
was it successful? Congratulations :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

When you unzipped phpBB2 did you go one level deep and renamed the next phpBB2 folder? Did you create a database for it? Accessing any other folder other than the root folders index file I believe might be a security feature (am not sure)...
your directory should not look like the following...
Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2.0.4/phpbb2.0.4
Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2.0.4/phpbb2
Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2/phpbb2.0.4
Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2/phpbb2
Your directory should look like this...
Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2/index.php
You must have rights to create a database and MySQL must be running on installation...
Go to http://www.aprelium.com/ip/ and make sure your address is correct, also if you have to access your IP using a port number you should add that too... i.e. http://0.0.0.0:port/phpbb2
"damn found an error" thanks for making me double check something... _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

Also for anyone installing Invision Forum,
it's quite the same as installing phpBB but,
type in /sm_install.php instead of just /install.php . |

Hi i've got a question if the directory looks like this
'Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2/index.php'
whats stopping someone access
'Abyss Web Server/htdocs/phpbb2/'
in that directory i have the admin folder, includes folder and others. Is there a way to stop people accessing them or have i done something wrong?
sorry if this may sound silly but im new  _________________ http://microbots.no-ip.com |

You can use Abyss to password protect directories in which you do not want anyone to access. Ultimately you can password protect phpBB2 but its not recommended unless you want your visitors to log in twice...
Use Abyss and password protect the directories you want protected. Its all in the Abyss manual about how to use password protection :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

I protected them but it asks the user to log in so i unprotected them.
How do i get it to access the forum like this 'http://mysite.com/forum' without linking to 'http://mysite.com/phpBB2/index.html' _________________ http://microbots.no-ip.com |

Make an alias.
virtual path: /forum
actual path: htdocs/phpbb2

I'm not sure. I had it installed and thought it was great. If anyone needs a forum alone I would definitely recommend it.
I've uninstalled it ever since though as the CMS I work with currently added a forum plugin which I think is great and very close to phpBB2.
It is probably best to ask on the phpBB forums. Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

I agree, its definitely confusing but tell that to the people who voted "no - but helpful"... I know its not straight forward and I'll get to changing it soon enough. Thanks 8) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

I switched from phpBB to YaBBSE because when someone not logged in would click Profile (menu at the top) it would say that this page doesn't exist. Wacko... Although YaBB is sloppier (in my opinion) It's easyer to use. |

Not sure but it looks like you've got the MySQL password wrong. Did you password protect your MySQL? If you didn't you can simply enter no password for database along with the database name of root though it is not recommended. Also, you have to create a database for phpBB2.
It is a high security risk not password protecting MySQL and you could be inviting trouble...
If you need a GUI to help administrating MySQL a bit easier try installing phpMyAdmin... The tutorial for it is located within this tutorial forum... Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

Chances are if you're getting 404 errors you've made a booboo installing the database settings for phpBB2 OR you moved your forum files OR you changed your port number...
phpBB2 is a complete package and if you got a 404 error its means phpBB2 is trying to link to a file which doesn't exist... Chances are you could've missed something upon installation or files were moved.
Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

It sounds like MySQL is not installed, on or configured correctly. Double check MySQL as it seems phpBB is ready to go. Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

Change root to admin. It seems MySQL is denying a user named root@127.0.0.1. Try changing the username and try again. Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

Do I have to config anything in MySQL? What about phpMyAdmin?
Where do I have to put the phpMyAdmin?
I currently have it in my actual webfolder, htdocs |

MySQL just has to be running ok without a hiccup. It is currently and probably installed best at "C:\mysql". Please remove phpMyAdmin from your htdocs folder. The guide clearly states where best to place and how to configure phpMyAdmin. Good luck :) _________________ Victor B. Gonzalez

This guide is only provided to help with installation. Your error most likely has something to do with a theme change. Ask in the forums at http://phpbb.com and tell us what they say about it.

successfully installed all parts required on the page you teach me, I encountered a issue that occured at the page of "start INstall phphbb2"
before the installation, we need to insert or type some information like user name and password. after the step, then pressed the "start install" buttom, there's an error message shown up, it said :"phpBB : Critical Error Could not connect to the database "
I dunno what wrong is over there
and when after I stalled the version of myphp4.0, there's another error message "Warning: mysql_error(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in C:\Program Files\Abyss Web Server\htdocs\phpbb2\db\mysql4.php on line 330
Warning: mysql_errno(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in C:\Program Files\Abyss Web Server\htdocs\phpbb2\db\mysql4.php on line 331
phpBB : Critical Error

Please could u answer this question asap????? |
