Nice idea - you need to move MailEnable into the correct category (mail) from FTP though. Hopefully people will actually look at this topic before posting, but I doubt it! |

To prove my point:
Thread Here
His post

Turning a computer on and off all the time is hard on your machine, hit it with a baseball bat if you want to break it. LOL.
No im serious turning a computer on and off is very hard on them and weres them out faster, the power surge when you turn them on can do a lot of damage.
Leave it on and use power management, your computer and its hardware will thank you for it.

Kind of off-topic... And that thread was pretty old, to. Around 4 -5 months.[/quote] |

That is not a trial. It is a trial IF you get the pro or Enterprise edition. There is a free/standard edition available. _________________ Hosted Abyss Sites-

Glad you caught that cause I was about to. That's the one I use and the free edition works great (so far :/).
Also another FTP server for the list is the one I use - Quick 'N Easy FTP (Free, no limitation) _________________ Currently running - Abyss WS - BB - Chat - Jabber - E-mail - FTP - MySQL... and still bored |

For a small home LAN, you would be much better off simply using fixed IPs. _________________

Anonymoose: fixed IP's can be a pain since I do alot of disk imaging, I prefer dhcp with mac based reservations so I don't have to change static ip's. I once wrote a script to do this in a static environment but it still required reboots after imaging, yuck. (not sure if that would still be true in the days of xp) but yes, i do see your point. _________________ Alpay Kasal

In your case, I can see how it would be useful - having different images for each workstation just to set a fixed IP would be a pain, scripting it would work, but is probably more effort than necessary.
When you say small LAN, how many PC's are you meaning? There are a lot of fancy DHCP servers out there with a free version limited to a small number of nodes.
DHCP Turbo used to support 20 nodes in the free version - that's now down to 5; probably less than you'd want but http://www.weird-solutions.com/weirdSolutions/pages/02products/download/step04.php?id=154.24.33 for reference.
If you have more than 5 nodes, this looks perfect, but there's no shiny GUI for you - you just whack your MAC addresses in an ini file and away you go...
http://ruttkamp.gmxhome.de/dhcpsrv/dhcpsrv.htm
If you want a caching DNS server for your LAN at the same time, give http://sourceforge.net/projects/dhcp-dns-server a whirl. Never tried that one though... _________________

They are stand alone programs and have nothing to do with Abyss. They work independantly. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I think he means add an account to the FTP server using Abyss Web Server X2.
You can do this with X1 also. Search the forum for "TYPSoft" without the quotes
and you will find a PHP script that I wrote that can add accounts.
Sincerely, TRUSTpunk |

Yes you can.
You can have a configuration where users/colleagues change the web files, and upload them to the server without having physical access to it. To do so, you will need the help of an FTP server to deal with the file uploading part.
For example, let's say you have a webmaster John who hosts on your server
his web site http://www.johnsite.com . John must register the domain
johnsite.com and make www.johnsite.com point to your server IP address.
When setting up his site, you should create a directory in your hard drive
where www.johnsite.com files should go (the Document Path). We will assume
you have created the directory C:\sites\johnsite . Now in Abyss Web Server
X2, you add a new host which Document Path is C:\sites\johnsite and which
host name is www.johnsite.com.
To have John upload and update his web site files at any time, you should
install an FTP server. There are many free and good ones (for example
GuildFTPD from http://www.guildftpd.com ). In the FTP server, all you have
to do is to declare a new user john, give him a password, and set his user
directory to C:\sites\johnsite .
The FTP server and the web server will work at the same time on the same
computer. Abyss Web Server will serve the pages requested by browsers while
the FTP server will be used by your webmasters to update the files remotely.
All John has to do is to prepare his files, to connect to
ftp://www.johnsite.com using an FTP client (there are many free FTP clients
on Windows such as FileZilla - FrontPage and other HTML editors can also
send files to an FTP server). He should use john as his username and the
password you've setup for him to log in his FTP account. Once done, he can
do what he want with his files (updating/erasing/modifying/creating
subdirectories/etc...).
This way of doing things is the same that is used by large web hosting
companies: they have the web server and an FTP server for files uploads. _________________ Support Team

I would like to add Mercury Mail Transport System (MTS) in this list.
http://www.pmail.com/overviews/ovw_mercury.htm
I believe it is one of the older if not one of the oldest MTS out there.
"The Mercury Mail Transport System is a Mail Server - a program that sends and receives mail on behalf of a group of users on a machine or local area network. Mail from the outside world is received by Mercury and placed in the addressee's mailbox, where the user can access it at any later point. Messages sent by local users to the outside world are passed to Mercury, which then takes whatever steps are necessary to deliver them, removing the burden from the user's workstation and allowing him to continue with other work."
The website also hosts the Pegasus email client, a pioneering modern email client. _________________

One incrediably easy to use ftp server is Golden Ftp Server. I think everyone should try it. Try the latest trial for 2.80 PRO. http://www.goldenftpserver.com/
You can setup user groups as on the screenshot (on the top.)
You just press add, and then you select the directory, doesn't take any time to upload. It just lets people access your directory which you choose under an ftp://<EXTERALIP>. I think once you try it, you'll know what I mean. It's probably the easiest one out there and even my 8 yr old brother knew how to use it. Try it, and add it to the list once you see what I mean. |

I think ZoneEdit and FreeDNS should be more appropriately classified as DNS Hosting providers. Also, BIND is not the only DNS servers for Windows. This list alone provides a variety of alternatives for DNS server software:

Two servers I like and use are:
OpenFire Jabber (IM) Server: http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp
Excellent really easy IM Server to use. Best if you have a static IP and a relatively dedicated internet connection. Connects and allows you to talk to other Jabber servers virtually out of the box.
Gene6 FTPD: http://www.gene6.com/
Very fast, powerful FTPD that can do virtually all you would need out of a FTP server. They are also working on a POP3/IMAP(w/ SSL)/SMTP server. |

If you notice, Gene6 and hMailServer have the same GUI design.
Also, add this to your servers list:
Abyss Web Server X1 and X2, pretty pathetic list without enlisting that power.
I like Ignite Realtime's Install4Jabber: Spark and Openfire available here.
Best of all, it doesn't support FreeBSD! But, Windows, Mac, Linux works.
It is free, sharp, clean, fast, open source (Java JRE runtime), TAR, GZ and DMG, even ZIP, poor guys must have been busy.
My Spark now looks like MSN Messenger come Yahoo! Messenger
By the way, it seems that turning my PC on and off cleans my cache, making it work better as the paging file gets tired with the RAM now and then. Besides, it is a notebook.
Anyone else got a notebook on full stop due to the best free (and some open source) servers?
I bet most of you have desktops, workstations and main servers, luckily I am just a small organization.
Anyone know a Jabber client like Spark, which is free, open source and supports MSN, Yahoo, AOL, Jabber and the common IM servers? |
