|
|
Ok her is my setup.
I have 2 websites running on my server and setup different configurations for each of them. The first one is http://prestoncovell.com and has a sub domain of http://www.prestoncovell.com. The other one is http://patchdog.com and a sub domain of http://www.patchdog.com.
Each website has there own subfolder under the htdocs folder. The domain and sub domain point to the same folder under the htdocs directory.
If i go to prestoncovell.com or www.prestoncovell.com I can reach the site with no problems. If you try patchdog.com or www.patchdog.com you can only reach patchdog.com but not the sub-domain.
This was working perfectly at one point on a standard Windows XP pro machine. I upgrade to a new machine w/Server 2003 Standard Ed. and just copied the directory under the htdocs folder over and start having this issue with that particular subdomain.
I am kind of lost at this point. I want to reinstall it but just got the server setup the way I like it and would not like to reconfigure the webserver side again if at all possible.
Questions... Comments... Im open to all suggestions
Thanks again PatchDog :?: |

Your DNS records for the domains were probably stale and they needed to be updated (this takes time as many ISP DNS servers have caches, so if your IP changes and your domain name DNS records change, it takes time until this is replicated in DNS caches worldwide). _________________ Support Team

Ok now its back down again.
My Dns records should have not changed. The only thing that changed was the forwording of port 80 to the new servers internal static IP Address. |

Its probably a dns issue that is out of your control. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Purchased the domains through Go Daddy. I set the DNS up through Zone Edit. Hey I know... but they are free up to the first 5 domains. Not sure if there tech support will talk to me unless I fork out some money.
I thought about blowing away the entire domain on zone edit and then recreating it after a few day and see if they give me any new name servers. I have a feeling one of the 2 name servers they provide to me is cacheing something and wont update.

|
|
Can someone do a nslookup for me on the 2 domains and subdomains. I would like to see which name servers are answering.
I have done it here but half the time my domain picks it up and shows my internal Ip addresses. The outcome is not same when I try. I would like to get the option from someone else.
Thanks,

According to Windows XP and other resources, your Name Servers are still
with ZoneEdit.com. Here's a copy of my logged commands.
Quote: |
C:\Documents and Settings\Joshua>nslookup -type=ANY www.patchdog.com
*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existent domain

www.patchdog.com internet address = 69.150.33.118
patchdog.com nameserver = ns1.zoneedit.com
patchdog.com nameserver = ns12.zoneedit.com
ns1.zoneedit.com internet address = 207.234.248.200
ns12.zoneedit.com internet address = 64.246.26.64

Thanks TrustAbyss that helps me out alot.
Is it possible that my ISP may be caching the DNS. I just remoted into my PC at work and found the my subdomain is working fine there. It does not respond at my home PCs and I have tried 2 different browsers.
Can anyone else reach the subdomain http://www.patchdog.com?
If so I have a theory. When I switched PCs and moved my webserver to a Windows 2003 server I believe that the internal domain controller may be causing the problem.
The 2003 server is setup as a domain controller. The internal domain is patchdog.com and I have my router using this as the primary DNS server and forword lookup zone pointing to my ISP DNS servers. I also have the ISP's DNS servers as my secondary DNS.
Is it possible that if I logon to my PC and it grabs the secondary DNS that it shows the subdomain and if it picks up the primary DNS that it doesnt show the sbdomain.
Just a theory. I am going to try something out. |

OK... I answered my own question.
I changed my windows settings and pointed my browseres dns settings to my ISP's dns and everything works fine. The reason it does not work is because I called my "Windows" domain patchdog.com. My websites name is patchdog.com as well.
If my "Windows" domain was called someting else it would work fine because it would look out onto the internet for the subdomain and not internaly.
There it is. I a nutshell I'm a dumb @ss for calling my internal domain and web domain the same thing.
Hope this help anyone else out there.
Thanks for all the help everyone!
