Well I've been reading the instructions and FAQ's and I still don't follow. What my problems are follows in these statements:

1..Do I put every HTML document, images, and such into one folder, or are there several I need?
2..I use WS_FTP to upload my files. How do I set that program up to get files to my website?
3..I have my own domain name for my site. How do I create the name "midwestweatherservice.com"? What URL do my customers use to get to the website?
4..Is host name the same as domain name? This is really confusing.

Any input is most appreciated!

I guess you did not read properly cos you just need to place all you html files in the htdocs folder will do.If you are having a dynamic ip i advise you to get a free domain to resolve all your problem. If you want a free domain you can go to http://www.dynu.com even you ISP block your port 80 and you can still link it.No need to use any FTP client to upload your files cos it is inside your pc.

I beg your pardon, but I read very closely the instructions and such. And what do you mean it's in my PC? Perhaps you should explain yourself more, so I can make sense of what you say! eaglefox

Please ignore that statement. Abyss is the EASIEST server available for free. Trust me. E-mail to the technical support and they will help you out!

Okay, I will ignore his statement. It seemed uncalled for anyhow! Actually, I have already written tech support, and they referred me to the forum here to see if someone here can help me. This webserver does seem easy enough, but for older farts like myself, getting the hang of settings/configurations is a challenge :D

1 Put all files in the HTDOCS folder in your Abysyss directory
2 Abyss doesn't have an ftp server. Get a free one from http://www.fastream.com/
3 You need to set an A reccord to your IP Address. EG: if you were 001.001.001.001 then ask your provider to setup your domain to setup an A reccord to that address. Don't complain to me if thats complicated. That's DNS for ya!
5 No. I'm not sure on that one, but No. Aprellium should know about that :D

Okay, I think I have my website up now. Now, how do I upload files to my website? I use WS_ftp client for this, but is it my understanding that this client cannot be used for this? :!:

And finally, how do I set up my webserver to allow people to view my site? Some of this may have been covered, but I must have missed that. All input is appreciated. :D

1..Do I put every HTML document, images, and such into one folder, or are there several I need?

If you create your website and locate all the files and folders of your site into just one folder "mysite" then drag and drop OR copy "mysite" into the htdocs directory...

Depending on which page in your "mysite" is the homepage will determine the path of how a visitor will get to your website. If you simply drop an "index" page directly into "htdocs" then trying to access your IP address will render that page... If you name your homepage anything else other than index you will then have to call that page directly...

drop the page "index" in htdocs and you can access it at your IP like http://127.0.0.1/
but
drop "endix" or "indix" or any other name and you will have to call that page directly like this "http://127.0.0.1/pagename

2..I use WS_FTP to upload my files. How do I set that program up to get files to my website?

If your website server is on the same machine you're located at then their is no need to ftp anything... ftp will only complicate whats at hand... If you design your pages and host your own server and all of this is happening on your own machine then simply drag and drop or copy into the htdoc directory...

3..I have my own domain name for my site. How do I create the name "midwestweatherservice.com"? What URL do my customers use to get to the website?

I understand you already own your own domain... Now figure out just two things... One is your IP address dynamic or static? Dynamic means your address will change a lot and static means your address is fixed... Give someone a dynamic address today and tomorrow they might not be able to access your site while giving someone a static IP address today means they'll be able to access your IP today, tomorrow, next week, for as long as you can maintain your account with your ISP.

If you have a dynamic IP address you need a middle man service which will give your server a permanent name, monitor your IP address for you on your behalf and when your IP changes on your system will send an update to the providers system and your fixed name will have registered the changed IP.

a good service for that is http://no-ip.com... They'll simply give your IP a name and if it changes a little software program on your computer will see it and update the name to point to the new IP almo immediately...

If you have a static IP address their is no reason to go with the above service especially if you already own your own domain... You can only complicate matters using the above service and if godforbid that service caught an outage, then so will your visitors... If you have a static IP then do this...

Point your domain name to your IP address... Your IP address looks something like this "http://127.0.0.1" in fact go here http://www.aprelium.com/ip/ and find out your IP address

If you can not point your current domain to your IP or to any address for that matter I would then suggest you get to know http://www.mydomain.com... they offer greater flexibility with your domain and really is an amazing service...

Both solutions no-ip and mydomain above have free and premium options...

4..Is host name the same as domain name? This is really confusing.

your local address is http://127.0.0.1/ or http://localhost/ or could even be http://192.168.0.1... Those addresses are not for the public but are only for internal reference...

though the 127 and localhost address is only for your eyes the 192 address I believe is good "ONLY' for an internal network... which means only computers on your local network will be able to access your server...

Just make sure you're not behind the above numbers before yo ugo crazy trying to figure out why no one in the public can see your website/s...

Good luck and stay positive :)
