Environmentalist, 44, killed by stingray on diving expedition

CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement.

Crew members aboard Irwin’s boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later, the statement said.

My sympathy and condolences go out to the family of a great wildlife icon.

I guess when you play with fire, you're going to get burned. I know he done
this stuff for quite a while, but the fact is that he had a dangerous job. I can't
believe this is the news I wake up to. He was a good man.

Edit: I guess the Stingray felt frightened. I still can't believe that happened.

I hope they killed the Stingray!

I personally don't think that Steve Irwin would have wanted that for one second. As you say "I guess when you play with fire, you're going to get burned" while this is true, Steve accepted this 100% and, had he survived, I think he would have said something along the lines of, "I don't blame the critter, I was in his territory and he just felt threatened, it's only natural he wanted to protect himself, thats why God gave him the barbs on his tail" or something along those lines...

He was an inspiration to the World and loved by millions of fans (me being one of them) and he will be truely missed!
My thourghts are with his family and friends.

R.I.P Steve

I met him at an expo, he's a very caring man and I can't imagine what his life and two children think. :(

He died doing what he was doing and there is now way he would have wanted the stingray killed for it.

There is alot of speculation to what really happened over here. Some people are even leaning towards a state funeral.

God bless the croc hunter.

its sad to see him go after all he was only 44 and a very popular pop icon/enviromentalist.

im not 100% suprised that hes dead BUT i am suprised by how he died, a stingray? thats the most ironic thing iv ever seen! i always thought he would die with his arm in a crocs mouth or something like that.

There's a big difference between a 'stickray' and a 'stingray' hc2995. Be alittle more careful next time =]

His Father has said that he wouldn't want a state funeral. I also saw on the late news earlier a small sign in the background saying 1964 - 2006? 8O

UPDATE: his family has declined a state funeral, i can understand why but it would have still been great to let the world see his funeral after all he was extreamly popular. At leased there will be a memorial service in his honor
