Help installing on linux! (used on WINXP)

Im running ubuntu 6.06 and have downloaded and extracted the abyss folder to my desktop it shows "abyssws" on my desktop after going to "applications->accessories->terminal" and typing "tar xzfm /home/howard/desktop/abyssws" i get this:

Error: Cannot write the process ID to log/abyssws.pid (key: root/server/parameters/opsys/pidfile - file: /home/howard/Desktop/abyssws/abyss.conf - line: 18 - col: 4)

whats this mean and how do i fix it?

Where have i been? School got heck-tick, had to move half way around the state, then back... and then i had to change jobs, so iv been away for a while :P

change the read/write permissions
