|
|
I recently had my DSL fixed at my home. Before, my website was rarely accessable due to connection problems, also IP changes.
Now I am wondering if people can get on my website after the changes are done?
My website address is www.ramileus.com
Thanks for feedback. |

It works. You should upgrade your server to version 2.3.2 though. |

Server offline? I can't access it right now (6:10pm EST). Pinging your IP address (69.217.23.110) times out. _________________ Stephen

What is really odd is that when I was in Las Vegas this week my first attempts to get on my website from a remote computer failed. Then the next day it worked 8O so it confuses me as to what is the overall cause of my server down time.
could it be the IP is not right in my settings?
could the computer be so old that it does not handle incoming requests well?
could it be NO-IP not updating the IP somehow?
Since connections are intermittant I would guess the server computer is at fault.... |

The most likely fault it that your IP address changed. If this occurred, no requests will even get to your server.
It could also be that your computer was shut off (power outage) or went on standby. Otherwise, maybe your modem had some trouble staying connected.
I don't think the problem is related to your computer's age as it has worked well for you for so long. I have had no trouble accessing your site previously.

BTW, I emailed you awhile ago about adding my server to your list of old servers. The info page for it is located at http://calvarybucyrus.org/Server/server.htm. It hosts both http://calvarybucyrus.org and http://stephen.calvarybucyrus.org. Thanks. _________________ Stephen

Thanks for adding me to the list.
Just curious, what was your connection problem? _________________ Stephen

Honestly, I don't know why the server could not be contacted for awhile. I have a static IP now, so i cant imagine it being an IP change.
I baffles me, sometimes the server is up for clients, other times it cannot be connected to. Before it may have been my dynamic IP and NO-IP did not keep up? or maybe my host computer? I just don't know since i know my ISP is almost always solid. |

You're hosting very large images. Consider shrinking the sizes of your graphics.
Here's a nice program that can do this for you. :-)
Xat.com Image Optimizer (Use Standard to avoid watermarks)

Five Ways to Optimize Your Website

The only reason why I think sometimes you cannot access your website, is the
reason why your files are so large. Never host a file over 1 MB on a self hosted
server or you will really screw your website's speed up.

Thats rubbish to start with. If you set up abyss correctly you can easily host files without screwing the speed up. I host several files that are around 5MB and recently let a friend download 1.3GB from me without any slow down at all. It all depends on the connection speed and the limits you set for the large file, which should be around 5-10KB/s slower than your maximum speed. That way it leaves some speed for the site, and generally people won't notice much difference, especially if you optimise your site for speed. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I once hosted MB's of files and the website turned very slow because of all the
speed being used from the downloads. I used to host 32 MB videos!
Andy, I'm just trying to suggest what could be causing it. Doesn't matter how
many large files you host, the speed can decrease. |

I agree but I bet you gave them full speed and not limited. Thats why it will slow down since no one else can get the bandwidth. His site went off completely, it didn't just slow down. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Bandwidth Throttling wasn't available at the time OffspringVideos.com existed. :-) |

Why do i get the feeling you two have a wealth of information about servers? :D
I wish i knew the things you do.
I am proud to say I just upgraded to abyss X2.3, something I have been wanting to do for a year. I also paid no-ip to monitor my http connection for ramileus.com that way i might get an idea of when outside clients cannot connect to my server.
Learning lots thanks to Abyss |

You could have used a free service such as www.mralert.com and/or the script I made which checks the connection from your own pc. I use these two on my site and they work quite well together. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
