IP keeps changeing

my ip keeps changing every day and i contacted my internet provider about it and they said

"There is not much that can be done to fix the lease times. But a way around
this is to use your host name instead of your ip address in your web server.
Even if the ip does change your host name does not. To find this go to
start and run, type command in. Click ok, When you get to the command
prompt type in ipconfig /all, the host name should be there. use this
instead of the ip."

i did that and i fond my host name to be:
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : bkg4ex1kat43ey

so now how do i make that work with the abyss server? :cry:

This problem isn't specific to the web server. It has to do with your network setting. So our advice is to subscribe for a free DNS service that support dynamic IP. It will give you a sweet name and will automatically associate it with your IP even if it changes. For example, look at http://www.dyndns.org .

yes, aprelium is correct. You have what is known as a 'Dynamic IP', which all dialup and many broadband connections use. Every time you dialup/boot up your modem, the isp assigns you a new IP.

Dyndns give you a little program that sits on your pc, and keeps the dns record of your ip for yourname.gotdns.com current.

Well, I used that tip you gave him, DynDns.org, but it seems like you cannot set a port in the address... The port to my server is 81, but since I can't set it, the address won't work... Are there any other free services like this one on the net??

Get the above DNS service cos what they provided is awesome which include port forward(which mean that you can assign port if your ISP block port 80).Usually most DNS service provide web forwarding too but very often those port(mostly port 80) are block by your ISP.Make a port scan on your ip and look out for open ports.An route to use is port 8080 which also can be assign for your web server. :wink:

I use the Dynamic DNS Service at http://no-ip.com. It's pretty easy to use.
You sign up for an account, choose a "hostname" (http://YOURNAME.NO-IP.COM or one of the others they provide you with).

Then you just download their program onto your PC. Once you install it, and run your server, keep the program running and it will automatically update your IP number whenever it changes so people can always find your web pages.

You can have up to 5 hostnames in your account. I think... :)
