Hello all members,
I have had a talk with Aprelium and we decided it would be a good time to post some forum rules. However, its everyones forum (everyone being forum residents), so it was decided that I create (well, suggest) some rules, and they are posted here first for everyone to agree on.
Once we have come to a decision, they will be officially posted.
I have come up with the following as a basis. I personally would post these on my own forum but its up to everyone else to give their input:

1. Before you make a post, use the forum search feature. Put in
keywords related to your problem. If you get too few results try to
narrow down your keywords. If you get too many try to make them more
specific.
2. After searching with no conclusion, try a search engine such as
Google, MSN or Yahoo. It could already be solved on another website.
3. After trying search engines with no luck you can try the forum.
Choose the correct forum to post in, and if there is no forum for your
problem, post it in General Questions. Non Abyss Web Server related
questions and topics should be posted in Off Topic Discussions.
When posting, make sure you include at least the following in your post
if related to connection problems:
- Your hardware set-up, e.g Modem > Router > Computer
- Your make of router (if you have one)
- Whether your ISP blocks port 80 (if you know)
In all posts you should include:
- Things that you have already tried to solve the problem.
4. To help keep the forum a friendly atmosphere, do not use abusive
language or make other members feel left out.
5. Don't post topics in Off Topic that actually have no relevance.
Spamming is forbidden. It may be called the Off Topic forum but it is
also to be used sensibly.
6. Do not post topic titles which do not explain what the topic is about. Be descriptive when typing a title. A bad example would be "HEEEEEEELP ME!". A good example would be "Problem with Linksys router".
7. No double posting. If you have something additional to add, use the EDIT button instead of making double-posts. If, after a couple days, there is no response to your question, you may "bump" it.
8. If you do not follow these simple rules and give the required information it is likely that your post will not be replied to. This is to save members time trying to figure out your actual problem.
If you follow this small list then you should find you get your answer a
lot more quickly.

Please read through those rules and let me know if you agree with them, and if you have any concerns or modifications to them.
The sooner we post the rules the sooner we should stop getting simple and easy to answer questions being asked. :-)

I’ve found that several forums that I’ve I’m a member of have caused more problems than they’ve solved! Many of the forums than quickly reversed the decision for rules.

Here's a couple more "common sense" rules to add...- Do not post topic titles which do not explain what the topic is about. Be descriptive when typing a title.
A bad example would be "HEEEEEEELP ME!". A good example would be "Problem with Linksys router".
- No double posting. If you have something additional to add, use the EDIT button instead of making double-posts.
If, after a couple days, there is no response to your question, you may "bump" it.
Making rules is one matter...Enforcing them is another.
Hopefully, Aprelium doesn't get an inbox full of messages from wannabe mods whining about every little infraction. |

I, to be quite honest, can't think of anything else to add.
I also agree with Moxxnixx. We don't need a bunch of wanna-be Mods (if I may use your phrase) trying to report every slight rule breaking. |

Why dont we get aprelium to agree on a suitable group of moderators to help moderate posts that are just useless, did not follow the rules or are general spam? This could help out aprelium a lot rather than relying on them to moderate the forum themselves.
Anyone in favour of this idea?

Now, what about moderators? Aprelium havent replied about this one so we dont know who, if anyone, will be moderators. We shall let aprelium decide if they want moderators then they can pick a suitable group of people.

This is a very delicate question. If we agree on having moderators, what mode of selection would you recommend?

I would go by maturity, the ability to answer a question properly, the persons time span on the forum, (e.g a new memeber who has been on the forum a week would not be a good moderator). I think they would be most important. If anyone disagrees, say so :-)

I agree with both p3 and The Inquisitor.
I pop by every day, read any new posts, but i don't post to every topic.
And only when i post, its in an area that i know about, like the PHP board.
The only boards that i don't visit or post in are the Perl, ASP, CGI Network, and Tutorials boards.
I have been here for longer than both p3 (jun 05) and The Inquisitor (dec 04) and both have posted more than I have
just my £0.02 worth!

Perhaps age should be considered? As a contract cannot be enforced on a minor, and it is also difficult to bring about legal action against them. (In the UK that is 18).
Although, I wouldn't have through it to be a problem in this particular case, as with drawl of mod privileges is relatively easy.

As a second note, now I've seen the full version of the rules they seem logical, and I've now decided that they are OK, and aren't like rules I've seen on other forums that caused the problems.

Well they were only designed as a guide really. Do what it says and you will get your help a lot more quickly, dont and you wont. Its simple.

Ive been informed the rules are going to be read through, edited if needed then posted.
I was also informed that Aprelium did not reply on the moderators topic because they cannot think of any suitable way to pick moderators. They said as soon as they do they will post and let us know.

| sorry to dig this up, but I is there any "hack" for phpbb that allows the users to vote if a message should be deleted... I was thinking along the lines of Wikipedia where something could be reverted if aprelium didnt like the modding... Just a thought, not sure if its possible :D |
