After some pains, I got PHP to run with AWS and process my PHP scripts. However, when I first load a page with a PHP script into the browser, I get the message "Properties for this program cannot be verified. The APPS.INF file is missing. Copy the APPS.INF file from your Windows Setup disk into your Windows INF folder." I assume this is occurring when it tries to start php.exe. If I press OK, it processes the PHP script and displays the page.

The Microsoft knowledge base said something about creating a pif file with the properties for the program. Can someone tell me exactly what I need to do?

By the way, I'm running Windows 98 Second Edition.

Thanks,
Allen

Strange !!! PHP is a Win32 native application and Apps.inf is used only with legacy MS-DOS programs. Please check the configuration of your system and set in CGI parameters "Resolve using the Windows Registry" to No for the least possible configuration errors.
If the problem persists, create an empty apps.inf file in your Windows directory. If this is still not the solution, try reinstalling PHP (and follow our guidelines at http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php.html .)

I tried creating an empty apps.inf file; now I get a slightly different but similar message.

If I double-click on php.exe to start it, it opens an MS-DOS window, and the command line field contains "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\conagent.exe".

Don't want to show my ignorance, but is there some setting that might be causing php to think it should be running as MS-DOS instead of Win32? Something that could be changed in the registry or somewhere? Was just wondering, because I chose the InstallShield method of installing PHP and was thinking maybe it might not have configured everthing correctly.

Windows does run Win32 .exe natively without requiring any further processing. The fact that you get prompted for some other helper application is really strange.
The installShield version of PHP is not different from the other. They have the same binaries and behave the same. But you can give the zip version a try.
What do you get if you run php from the command line?
By the way, are you sure that your system is not infected by a virus? Some of them will corrupt .exe files and make them behave abnormally.

When I run php from the command line, I get an error message, with the header "conagent.exe", that relates to the apps.inf file. Before, this message said that apps.inf was missing. Since I created an empty apps.inf file, it now says that another program may be using the apps.inf file.

When I click OK on this error message, an MS-DOS window opens with "PHP" in the header. If you open the Properties and click the "Program" tab, the Cmd Line field displays "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\conagent.exe."

When I try to close the MS-DOS window, it says "Windows cannot shut down the program automatically. It is recommended that you exit the program with its quit or exit command."

I don't think I have a virus. My other applications seem to be running normally (or at least as well as can be expected in a Windows environment).

Thanks for helping. Can't believe I can't find anything related to this in the Microsoft knowledge base.

conagent.exe is not part of the PHP distribution. It isn't also part of Abyss Web Server package.
We found some information on that file at http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win95_3x/Win95/Q_10181869.html . In short terms, this is a problem in your Windows installation.
