If it's not a machine that is dedicated to running server applications only, you can't really call it a 'server' - it's just a home PC that happens to be running a webserver ;)

PC's :
Server/General PC
Athlon XP 2200+ / 1024mb DDR333 / GF4 MX4000 / 3x160gb, 1x120gb HDD's / Lite-On 4816H CDRW/DVD-ROM, Pioneer 107 DVDRW

Gaming PC
Pentium 4 3.06ghz / 512mb RDRAM / Geforce 6800GT 256mb / 120gb HDD / NEC 1100 DVDRW

General PC
Athlon 1.4ghz / 512mb SDRAM / Geforce 5600 Ultra 128mb / 40gb HDD / NEC 2500 DVDRW.

Mine isn't a PC, its an actual server from IBM.

My server has:
P3 700MHz
Four 256MB memory
Five 40GIG hot-swap hard drives (and one open to add a 6th)
20GB Tape Drive
10 port ethernet switch (built-in)
Three 205W power supplies
Four hot swap fans
CD-rom
and thats about it... Its an IBM Netfinity 5600

Its currently running Windows Server and Mandrake, however i'm looking to switch Linux's soon... I'm also wanting to upgrade all 6 hard drives to at least 100GB and upgrade to a P4 soon.

Hello,

My server specs are:

Processor: Intel Pentium II 500MHz Slot 1
RAM: 396MB DDR
HD: 1x9gb and 2x16gb SCSI 10,000RPM drives
Graphics: 1MB (Pitiful I know but its only a server!)
Power: 350W
OS: XP Pro
Connection: 750K NTL Broadband (25KB/s upload (also pitiful but does the job))

Seems to run Abyss quite well, even with PHP, Perl and FTP all on the same server.

LOL.

One of my dads friends has (in total) 18TB on his 6 computers and 2 servers in his house. Its VERY impressive. He said he was going to try and 'download the internet'. I thought this would be pathetic... Not sure if he is still keen on the idea!

Andy.

Putting that kinda ram espicially SD will add alot of latnancy and affect performance .... Plus its seems a older chipset may not be able to support that amount of ram :s

I agree, the faster the upload the faster your site will go. Mine is 256Kbps upload (25KB/s ish) and 750Kbps download.

I dont use abyss much now as I have just purchased a domain and webhosting package from lycos, I was tired of my site being offline with it being a home system.

However I do host my webcams, and stream video and audio with it and the bandwidth limiter comes in especially handy for this.

Maybe I might switch providers sometime soon, and get a faster upload rate, but for now those stats stand.

Not the best upstream speed is it...?

I hate the way ISP's give us so little upstream bandwidth for the simple reason that we probably will host our websites off it... Seems stupid to me.......... Never the less...

ISP's have most upload speeds low to save money and offer MORE download speed... The majority of the people will use download a lot more then upload... Thats why most ISP's have plans just for those who wanna host, although they cost a lot more...

Well, if you REALLY want a large size, I could make my htdocs over 16GB with movies and music! Beat that...

(The reason I don't is I don't have enough upload to be bothered enough to let people download any of them!)

Dedicated server machine: (diesel)
Case/mobo: Dell OptiPlex G1 tower (ca. 1998)
Proprietary form factor that is wonderfully easy/fast to disassemble,
an exception to the rule that proprietary = pain in the ass
- PII/333 MHz processor
(Does fairly well, I'm not exactly running AngelFire/Geocities hosting :-)
- 192MB RAM
- 20GB HD
- onboard Intel 10/100 Ethernet
- onboard ATi 3D Rage VGA video
- Miracle brand 9-inch monochrome monitor
- BTC 102-key keyboard and optical scroll mouse
- generic internal CD-ROM and floppy drives
- 250-watt power supply
- CyberPower 1000 AVR UPS

OS: FreeBSD 5.3 RELEASE
(Command-line only, no GUI, to save resources and because I am a geek)
- Abyss Web Server X1 (v 2.0.0.20)
- NoIP DUC
- Both started at boot time via /etc/rc.local
- PHP 5.0.4
- Driven from my desktop machine via SSH and SFTP,
using PuTTY and FileZilla, respectively

----------

Desktop machine:
Dell Dimension somethingorother tower (FrankenDell)
Pseudo-ATX form factor common in Dell/MicronPC around 1996-99
- PIII/1.2 GHz
- 256MB RAM
- HD1: 4 GB Maxtor IDE
- HD2: 20 GB Seagate IDE
- Toshiba internal 2X DVD-ROM drive
- generic (Mitsumi) floppy drive
- nVIDIA TNT2 Model 64 2X AGP video card w/32 MB memory
(Does Photoshop/Poser/Dreamweaver/Firefox just fine, thanks)
- Samsung SyncMaster 997DF 19" Flat-CRT VGA monitor
- IBM Model M PS/2 keyboard, ca. 1988 (Yeah, I'm one of THOSE people)
- White/smoke Logitech optical scroll mouse with an emerald-green,
6200 mcd LED from LSDiodes.com (I'm also one of those people :-)
- 200-watt Enlight ATX powersupply
- HP ScanJet 3300C flatbed color scanner

OS: Windows 2000 SP 4 with all the fixin's, dual boots FreeBSD 5 w/Gnome
(Trying to wean myself off of Microsoft :-)
- Website constructed with Photoshop 7 and Dreamweaver MX
- Uploaded via SFTP with FileZilla
- MP3/MOD player of choice: XMPlay, 'cause WinAMP is a big, slow,
AOL-owned turd now

There you have it, more or less.
