Don't get me wrong, I'm loving the retro sorta feel of this forum and website and all, but I think updating the website to carry it into the future would do well in attracting even more new users!

While the software is still being maintained, this website might give potential new users the wrong idea, thinking it's some old, outdated software.

You could even maybe do something like have a legacy version of the site, so long-term users can switch to that if they wanted to.

I love Abyss Web Server, and think it should be more well known - bringing it into the next decade could make a huge difference!

EDIT: I was just reading some other forum posts, which might explain why it hasn't been upgraded. If that's the case, then sorry about this!

Could you suggest a modern forum script that we may use?

Lots of companies (e.g. Twitter and Cloudflare) use Discourse which provides a really nice and easy-to-follow UI.

Here's examples of them in action:

https://community.cloudflare.com/
https://twittercommunity.com/

I'll add other potential alternatives if I come across any others.

Discourse looks really nice, but I really don't like it's lay-out and the way topic are presented and older topics "disappear" unless you do some endless scrolling.

Yeah, that's a good point. I also don't think it can be self hosted and they require you to pay a huge monthly fee. I asked a friend and he said Flarum might be a good option.

I can't find any examples of forums with it, but from some images I've seen of it, it looks similar to Discourse, but each topic section is more clearly defined, plus it's free and open source. I might look further into it.

Discourse's requirements are too much for a forum software. It also encourages people to ask over and over again the same question since they can't read the history (or at least access previous questions about the same topic) easily.

Flarum is on our list too. But it has been in Beta for so long. They even discourage using it in production: https://docs.flarum.org/install.html .

That's why we're sticking with this heavily customized PhpBB 2 fork. Any other alternative we found about was looking like the current forum. :(

If you've other forum software suggestions, please go on and feel free to share them with us.
