HTML form validation by CGI executable

Trying to get my head around validating a HTML form, so that the form appears unchanged execpt for the result of the validation, like "duplicate username" for example.
Is this possible without redrawing the whole form? If anyone has a link to an aexample, it would be appreciated.

adamlevine01,

If you do not want the whole page to be "redrawn", you'll need more than classical HTML form submission. Web pages that do that require some Javascript to post the data behind the scene to a CGI or a script and then translate that back into a success message or an error.

We suggest to have a look on the blog post in http://michaelsoriano.com/how-to-ajax-validate-forms/ which explains the technique.
