[Newly editted information starts here.]

My abyss-restarter (monthly log splitting, etc.) program had an installation glitch ONLY if you're running Windows 95, 98, or ME. If you had downloaded a version of abyss-restarter prior to the current version, 1.3, AND you're running 95, 98, or ME, please download 1.3, and the problem will be corrected. If you're running NT, Win2K, or XP, there is no need to download the new version. The program may be found at http://www.billanddot.com/downloads.htm. Thank you, Andrew, for helping me get through this problem.

[End of new editted information.]

I've been using Abyss for a month or so now, and just wandered into this particular sub-forum. At the risk of receiving brutal -- and hopefully helpful -- comments, here goes. My home page is:

http://www.billanddot.com

The Downloads page on my site also contains "abyss-restarter" and "end-of-log-checker". The first splits Abyss logs into monthly logs and the second shows via float-over the last log-entry time. Full explanations are in the General sub-forum.

Regards,

Bill

Just some friendly Advice. :D

Your website isn't bad as the "pink" appears a bit violet to me.

We have a home web server running Abyss and Web-App for our family. It's as handy as a pocket in a shirt. Some stuff is family business only so Abyss' security is a handy tool to keep things private. Web-App has forums, articles, etc...all good for families.

Though Web-App isn't as powerful as some of the other "portal" tools like PHPNuke, etc., it is very easy to install and configure.

Have you guy's even tried that Abyss - Restarter program , I don't
know who created that but Aprelium needs to add that to their website

Why Add ABYSS RESTARTER ?

01. It saves a copy of your abyss.conf file

02. All you do is fill out some small info
and it will automaticly restart the server
and replace your old log with a new one

03. It Helps me get beter stats from
Web Log - Expert (Thanks man!) :D

TRUSTpunk:

1) I wrote abyss-restarter.exe from scratch. See the tail end of the readme file that comes with it (in which I also thank two other people for having written some pieces of that program).

2) Thanks for your comments on that program (and please let me know if you encounter any problems with it). I run it myself, of course, every day at 5AM (local time).

Regards,

Bill

Im switching my logs every day so I can know exactly who's visiting and
who I need to report if their trying to hack my web server , thanks again!

Suggestion: Make it optional to create an extra
abyss.conf file , im tired of seeing a bunch of
those each time I rotate my logs and also create
a schedule program to switch logs.

PostPosted: Sat Feb 07, 2004 7:09 pm    Post subject: 1) New Programs; 2) Question for TRUSTpunk Reply with quote

1) All: I put some posts up a day or so ago on the GENERAL QUESTIONS forum (maybe not the best place to put that) describing two programs I wrote last week:

A) abyss-restarter, referred to above, and;
B) end-of-log-checker, which sits in your tray (for the really curious).

2) TRUSTpunk, I'd been playing with WebLog Expert for a while, and actually just now went and bought it. I read your identifying-hacker link above, and I understand the business about "scripts," but I don't understand how you generated your report (to send to ISPs). Could you elaborate on the process in a bit more detail?

Regards,

Bill

Just my 2 cents worth, but I really think automating mail to ISP abuse desks is only a few steps away from spam. You should consider scans like these background traffic of the internet, not generate more traffic by sending off mail about it :(

All I did , was first run my access.log in weblog expert and then I looked at the error hits and found some suspicious script code , so then I decided to open my access.log in Notepad and find it manually by using the find feature and using the keyword /scripts , after I get to the hacking type code , I copy that whole log line in a new log file named hacker.log and I ran hacker.log in weblog expert and it gave me the following information

Time & Date

Country

Hostname: Also shows ISP in the address line

IP Address: (I basicly took this from the hacker.log file)

Hacker Command: Its shown in weblog expert error hits :D

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

P.S. Please add that feature that I mentioned earlyier in my recent post

TRUSTpunk (et al.),

Per your request, I've now released version 1.1. The only change is that backing up abyss.conf is now optional (athough I still recommend that it do the backups, but I try to honor requests).

Just download the new installer from...

http://www.billanddot.com/downloads.htm

...and install it, and run the program with INITIALIZE after it one time, and you'll be presented with the new questions (and can answer "No" to the first question, re backups).

Regarding running this program periodically automatically, I use the free version of Windows Scheduler, and just give it abyss-restarter.exe as a program to run (in my case, once a day). See:

http://www.splinterware.com/products/wincron.htm

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill
