Hi,

I'm using Abyss X1 version 2.7 on Windows 7 Ultimate SP1.

I have a download directory which is a virtual directory. It is password protected.

When a user attempts to access a file anywhere in or below the download directory, they are prompted for a username and password. If they enter these correctly, they can download the file as expected.

This procedure has worked on every browser I have tried until recently when I got an Android phone. The procedure fails on every Android browser except for Firefox and Opera. On the browsers on which it fails, the user is prompted for a username and password as normal, but the resulting download is unsuccessful. By "unsuccessful", I mean an HTML page is downloaded instead of the desired file. The downloaded HTML file contains the text "Unauthorized".

As far as I am aware, the only thing different about Firefox and Opera on Android is that they are not based on WebKit. Would this have anything to do with it?

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, please let me know.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,
Jacko

jacko9000,

Abyss Web Server uses basic HTTP authentication which should be easily implemented on any Web client/browser.

The problem here looks like a bug on the client side or even a bug introduced by a transparent proxy between the Android device and your server.

If you'd like to investigate this problem further, please contact us so that we send you an SSI test page that will make things clearer to us.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I have since found out that the problem is indeed with browsers which are based on Android's WebKit implementation.

Google was notified of this bug back in 2008, but they never fixed it, and it still exists today in Ice Cream Sandwich.

The bug was first reported at http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1353

So I have been recommending Opera Mobile to users in order to overcome this problem. The nightly builds of Firefox 14 at http://nightly.mozilla.org/ also look promising in terms of speed.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Jacko

jacko9000,

That's good to know. By the way, it's astonishing to know that Google did not fix such a simple bug since 2008!!
