PostPosted: Tue Jul 15, 2003 8:10 am    Post subject: 3 Questions Reply with quote

1) Can my site be accessed if im not online (dial up connection) as long as the server is running because my friend said she was still able to go when I was offline.

2) I went to my index page and second index page and it worked fine but when I tried my subpages like http://myip/picture.html I kept getting website not responding so I went to get my ip again and it had changed but when I put that ip the sub pages worked.

My question is why did this happen?
Is there anyway to prevent it or a (free) server that oesnt use my ip but points to it and its always the same? Thanks

What type of dialup connection? If you are talking about dialup connection as in modem dial-up connection, there no way anyone will be access your PC when your PC is not connecting to any public network. Think of this, if you PC is not on line, no one can see you.

Your IP change is due the way your PC connect to the network. Dial-up modem and Dynamic type account will not stay with permenate IP.

When you use the subpage back, I would assumed you are using the cache that your broswer stora previously. The page your PC reading is from your previous visit that is store in your harddrive.

First is to find out what type of connection or account you have from your ISP. If you can answer above question, it will self-answer this question.

Just remember, Dynamic or dial-up account will share pool of IP. Each time or certain cycle, your IP will change to something else.

I do not think using a dial-up modem type of connection will be possible to host a webserver or any server. The only time I think you can only host is when you know that person in question have made a preset time for you to have your server waiting for incoming request. Otherwise, I do not see how your PC is offline and not connecting to any outside network to be able to contact your PC.

It the same as I turn off my pager or my cellphone, how are you going to call me? If it were to set my cellphone to standby eventhough I forgot to bring it with me to work but the cell phone still can answer and to tell incoming caller to leave a message.

According to your conversation with your friend above.... If I understand correctly, it seem that you are prepare to answer the incoming request but pretend you are not there and anytime of day or night when someone want to request something from your PC, are you going to that PC and login for that request? What happen if I want to request something from your PC about 3am in the middle of the morning, are you going to wake up and turn on your PC and login to your Dial-Up modem? If that person is my BOSS and my lifelyhood depend on it, then yes. But if it anyone else.... then DIFFINITELY NO WAY. I would goto him and beat the hell out of him for waking me up at that crazy hour.

First I need to say this. You have very complicated setup / network to begin with. Due to the nature of your dynamic IP and added proxy to your network setup.

so your saying each time my ip changes I have to update the link to my main index page so people will be able to visit it? I mean there is no way that I wont be able to prevent this or have one main ip address? no-ip.com cant have it so it always points to the new ip address?

If you have a cable or dsl and or Satelte connection that alway online but have a "Dynamic IP", then you need additional service like "No-IP.com" or similar service to help you maintain or update your moble IP. "No-IP.com" or similar service will update your IP by mean of a software you get from them and install.

I think I found the account or whatever but I dony know what it means so it didnt self answer unless your talking aout something else

Yes, the above service that I mention will update your "Dynamic IP" at preset interval.

You need to learn how to configure your "Proxy" setting. Generally, what proxy do is directing traffic and filter (Generally speaking). You will need to set your proxy of which traffic to route to which computer in your network or otherwise the request will not make to your intended PC where your Abyss server is waiting for request. I am just giving you a tip of the iceburg summary. Proxy can do alot of thing then what I just mention above.

But according to your message above regarding AOL proxy, you must be using some kind of software like a dial-up modem (DUN) by mean of a modem to connect to the internet. If that the case, you maybe unable to use Abyss as a server running 24/7. But you still can use Abyss as "InDemand". Meaning, turn on when you need to serve but turn off when you do not.

In my IMHO / IMHE, using DUN is not good to host any server.
Reason:
- DUN connection is way too slow to send webpage or even download file (ie 3MB will take atleast 30minute).
- Not on 24/7
- Too complicated to maintain a small file
- Very limited on option.

Almost forgot.
Are you offline while trying to detect your IP? If so, you will need to connect and on a network before you can see what IP connect to.

JUST A SMALL TIP FOR THE DIAL UP PERSON !
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You don't have to update your links inside your index.html page , all you need to change is the path to your files , say if your pages are located in your htdocs folder , you would put as a link

<a href="/your_page.html">Link name</a>

If you want to put your images up , you put

<img src="/your_image.jpg">

If you want to link to a file you , put

<a href="/your_file.zip">file name</a> or .exe or .mp3 what ever your file extension is

If you do this with all your web pages inside your htdocs folder , you will not have to update your pages to fit your IP address. Have a nice day 8)

I was online hen I tried to get it but its working no and I use dynamic ip service so thank but I will never unerstand why my hits go up when im offline but the server is running and there are no error hits either...I suppose my redirection service sends them to an alternate site and shows how many people tried to access my site and as for my friends being able to go....maybe they are seeing the page stored on their computer from a previous visit but one of my friends had never been there before (the one in the converstation above) and he could still see.......lol this is some complicated stuff for me but I guess if im getting hits ill just leave it alone

This message getting me very confuse. Let me try to narrow it down to what you are trying to say.

When you indicate turn off. Do you mean the PC or Abyss console? If you mean the console is turn off or the Abyss windows screen no longer showing on your Desktop, then look at your taskbar tray where you see your clock. Do you see Abyss icon? If yes, does the Abyss icon have a "X" infront of it or not? No "X" then it on, with "X" then it is off.

Without "X" and your PC is still connect to your ISP by mean of network, then you are still hosting your webserver. That will explain your hits. You should not getting hit of any kind when your PC is not connect to any network.

Do you understand the states or situation you are in better now?

If you have a Dynamic account from your ISP and you are using a DNS service like "NO-IP.COM" or similar service, it should update your dynamic IP to the current IP your network is using.
