We recommend books from O'Reilly (http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/). They have really good stuff about programming in general and about web servers/web programming in particular.

Any other suggestions?

Search there for PHP or Perl, you'll find a lot of books about them. You can also search for other topics (see the left black frame and scroll it until "Book series" section). Try also their collections "In a nutshell" ( http://nutshells.oreilly.com/ ).

the books im looking for info on are as follows how to write webservers== like abyss...mail servers like mailenable... and eudora etc....irc clients and servers like mirc and so on....

i believe some of these books are hard to find . especially when it comes to tcp/ip network programming with regards to internet applications.

more book info would be handy....

here is one book i found that describes how to build these apps!

building internet applications using visual c++

by Kate Gregory

she talks about how to build client side apps for email , ftp, news , gopher, finger , whois, and a webserver ---server side app

this is the sort of info im after (especially windows socket programming etc.)

goose, for us, the best way to understand how servers work is to read source code of free available ones. Frankly, we never found an interesting book about that topic.

hmmm... i might reverse engineer , but im not a hacker hehe ...and im not one to steal...anyway there seems to be a few books out there ...but very few which is a shame. but maybe i can get something from them. yes its good to learn from others code ...but with bad commenting and hard to read is wasting time. im more interested in the core code and what everyone has to use and build around it.

Spyware??? What for? Making money from spywares and from ads are just legends. No one after the end of the dot com era will pay a cent for a mailing list or for spying users.

Heehee.... Get user and visitor information regarding about where they visit and what they buy ... etc... Using Web Server is a key. The Server gather information and that information is sell to advertiser ... etc... Beside getting information from the browser, it can also gather informatin from the mail client like OE. Eventhough most DotCom are gone, there still ton of Marketing type of group out there that want your info. and use it to target a specific protential buyer. Mailing list is still valuable for certain company or group. Where there is a company out there, it have Marketing Dept. and they need mailing list for Sale Depart. to get lead and get protential buyer.

And those Marketing guys are usually fired after a few months because they spend fortunes buying mailing lists and have only 0.0001% return :D
Besides, it is really hard to put all that you descibed in the 108 KB of Abyss. If I were you, I'll start suspecting programs that are 50 MB or more (such as Win XP  )

Windows XP is diffiniately a bloated but no one can really blame it. It try to somewhat satisfy the general public with all those different fancy theme, accessories and components to make user happy. If only they can concentrate on what the purpase of Windows truly is, just maybe it will be better.

Way back in time, Windows was just a shell of DOS and add module for add-on, now it everything under a big package.

I love XP and it is no doubt Microsofts greatest OS outside of 2003 server and if one CD of XP can carry some spyware what about 3 CDs of Linux?

Just throwing in my 2 cents... It begins to feel good, btw I state this while downloading Red Hat Linux 9 shrike i386 :)

I still enjoy Windows 2K Pro. Very simple without those extra fat. XP in the other hand is my second choice if it had to be inorder of picking. Window ME is beyond my last choice of OS. Windows ME is just Strange, it have the coe of Win98 but have some minor of Windows 2k and total up to unstable OS. Wonder why alot of people want to goto from Win98 to WinME. WinME IMO is a cripple Win98 OS and not even close to Windows2K. I am still checking on Linux base and have no opinion yet to say either good or bad at this time.

I am not sure anyone could suggest more information except to look at Amazon.com or Border or maybe Barn and Nobles. Or use google for "socket program".

If you wnat to learn more about coding for IRC I suggest that you start by learning C, and then going to the various sites that maintain the source code for the various server out there and looking at their source. It is very difficult to make you own IRC server so I would suggest that you start by maknig your own client. Basing it off mIRC would probably not be the best as it uses its own panguage, you would be better off by looking at once sthat use PHP, Prl, etc. :)

To be honest it is much easier to take a version of say an IRC server that you like and then modifying it with the additions, etc that you would like to see and using that. :)
