I have my DVD files stored on a local server that I access remotely with Abyss to play my music files , show images, retrieve data etc etc.
Now, can I remotely view these videos as a streaming server which will stream the files (e.g. Windows Media Server) using Abyss? I don't wish to download the files only to play them. many thanks jeffjohn |

Many thanks pkSML for your valued comment- I'm travelling in Europe at the moment so can not follow up your advice easily, yet. But your link looks good. Can you possibly advise how I might integrate video streaming with my Abyss web page? |

Followed up your interesting links and have come to a realistic halt, I think.
Quote:- Examples of needed bandwidth are:
* 0.5 to 4 Mbit/s for a MPEG-4 stream,
My link from France via Wanadoo to UK home base rarely (never) exceeds 1Mb/sec.
I assume that I am unlikely to get an uninterrupted viewable flow from my video files (4-8GB size) . |

Yes, that's definitely true.
You *could* compress your files to MPGs and get them to fit on one CD. Otherwise, just buy an external hard drive and store them all on there. _________________ Stephen

|
|
I'm on Mac, but I know there's a QuickTime version for Windows so this might work for Windows too.
I just launch QuickTime then in the File menu I select "Open URL..." then I copy and paste in the URL to the video file on m Abyss web server at home.
i.e., http://abyss.gotdns.com/files/torrentssymlink/Apocalypse%20Now.avi
I then wait about 10-15 seconds for it to start loading the beginning of the movie and I click play and there I am watching my Movie at Starbucks from my desktop computer at home with Abyss running. I have my files in a password protected directory, but it works fine because QuickTime is smart enough to ask me for the credentials.
The only catch is I'm not able to fast forward unless it's already downloaded up to that point which isn't too big a deal for most movies that you simply want to watch from beginning to end. But yeah, when I try to click on an advanced area of the timeline to advance, QuickTime quits on me. I'm not using the new QuickTime X, so YMMV.

Or, for both Mac and Windows use VLC.
Just open VLC and under the File menu select "Open Network..." and put in the Movie file URL just the same as you would for QuickTime above.
Same limitation as above with QuickTime where if I try to click on an advanced area of the timeline to fast forward VLC quits on me as well, but YMMV. |
