Even if your router dosnt support loopback, it is still possible to view your site using your remote address.

1) Open Notepad
2) Load the file C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\ect\hosts.sam (extension may be different on your machine)
3) Add a line at the bottom of the file "127.0.0.1 http://www.your-internet-address.com"
4) Save

Now open your browser of choice, and enter your internet address - it should load up your website.

Isn't the file just names "hosts" without any extension? Also, you shouldn't write http:// in it, just the IP-address.

Well your unique arn't you...

Adding to cmx's post; adding protocols will only allow you to use it for that protocol.

For Example:

Address being Http://www.mysiterox.com/ won't allow me to access Ftp://www.mysiterox.com/

Mikor,

For more details (especially about the exact file name), please read http://www.aprelium.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=52210#52210 (the last part).

Actually, under the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC directory a filename with extension .SAM actually represents a SAMple file for the named feature listing. Examples are HOSTS.SAM and LMHOSTS.SAM - these are SAMple files. They're not really the config file. cmxflash is right, the correct file is only HOSTS.

The HOSTS file is actually your overriding DNS system. Note that even if "more officially authoritative" external DNS servers do not agree with your local HOSTS file, your local HOSTS file will still determine the local DNS resolution. One must not confuse a locally cached DNS registry with that of the overriding settings in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS.

Because of the above-mentioned characteristics, it would not be advisable to fill up your HOSTS file with hard DNS resolutions especially if you're dealing with a laptop and you travel a lot - and therefore use different internet-access services from your home one. In this case, your laptop will not be able to properly resolve some internet addresses. Take note that all hard DNS resolutions in your HOSTS file are used in all application level network protocols - FTP, SMTP, Ping, etc and not only in HTTP.

The old spyware free KazaaLite software package actually modified your HOSTS file so that known adult, advertisement, hijack, spyware and other misrepresenting sites would resolve to 127.0.0.1.

Ok but this would mean that Windows XP Home Edition doesn't get sample files. :)

Don't worry, ol' chap, even my XP Pros at the office do not have HOSTS.SAMs. They do have LMHOSTS.SAMs though.

Okay, I've been searching and reading, and now I'm stumped.

EDIT: I removed previous info because no longer valid.

I have a brand-new domain hosted by Abyss Web Server:
http://rollyerown.net/

RollYerOwn!, check if you can make your Abyss X2 website listen on both ports 80 and 8080. This is so that you can view http://rollyerown.no-ip.org/ from your own local server PC without adding the 8080 port spec. As far as I know, you can only do hostname resolutions at the DNS level (no port forwarding feature there).

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I've since sorted things out. :)

I've changed my URL as well. Now it's http://rollyerown.net/. I switched from No-IP to DynDNS. The site's up and running, and I'm working on a new template.
