is it possible to assign value to $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_USER'] and $_SERVER['PHP_AUTH_PW'] so that they can go into protected folder?

These variables are set by PHP before it starts running a script. More information about them is in http://www.php.net/features.http-auth .
