Hi:

I'd like to ask a presales question. How can a person handle download managers and bots with abyss x2? Is there a way to limit them to one connection and then regulate that speed?

Thanks,

Jake

You can limit the speed of a file extension, a folder, or an IP. But bear in mind that limiting the number of connections per IP will seriously affect some people, especially if they want to download AND browse the site at the same time. You are better off restricting the file extension speed, allowing a lot of connections and letting them connect as they wish. The number of connections will not impact the server performance, bandwidth usage will so limiting it will have a better effect.

I am running apache and have a couple of people that are using download managers to make a half dozen connections each. They are using up half my bandwidth.

If I make limits on a file extention, can I make more than one extention?

Also, if I limit by file extentions at 10k each they would still be using a lot more bandwidth than the regular user.

When you limit by ip, does that also limit them when they want to browse a different folder?

Can't it be configured to aloow 2 connections per ip instead of just one?

Yes you can do this.

It can do yes depending on your available bandwidth. If you have 100Mbps like I do then this would not be a problem because there is excess bandwidth, but if you have say 0.5Mbps and they take it all up with their download the folder browsing might be a problem.

Yes, you can set this to any amount you wish.

just so we are on the same page. It can be set to any number of instances by vistor ip address. Or are we talking about the ip address of the website?

Also, I am running 5 virtual hosts. Will that make any difference?

thanks,

Its per visitor IP. The IP of your server has nothing to do with it.

You can do it from the console, I believe, under the general page.

You have to disable Download Resuming to stop multiple connections to a file download. It's under "General -> Advanced Parameters" part of the console.

No, sorry. You would have to write a script that counts how many downloads per IP. It's not an easy task to do but I plan to create such a thing in the near future.
