OK guys, this is obviously an off topic post, but I'm posting anyways ;) I'm sure with the community intelligence at least one of you guys will have had some experiance with this or at least know some vague signs.

I'm begining to worry that HDD failure is imminent, Seemingly randomly my HDD isn't detected at boot, I open up the case, check everything's conencted, it always is. I turn it on again, and volia, I can boot again, I dont get any weird noises or suchlike, am I just worrying or do you guys think my HDD is about to kick the bucket?, thanks..

We expreienced last year the same problem with a HDD. It started to do that by monday. And Wednesday, the HDD was completely lost. So try to backup your files first, then do a scandisk.

Hey no kidding, My Notebooks HDD failed after only 6 months. It was one of my worst PC events ever, luckily I was still in warranty... I hope it isnt but if you really feel it is get a system checker, analyzer for your hardware to scan for early problems.

I hope its no HDD problem and if it is I hope you're still in warranty :)

You might wish to check out S.M.A.R.T products... Their good at checking HDD health. Check out some at http://www.webattack.com/Shareware/system/swdisktools.shtml

I looked into the freeware section but couldn't find some good ones... Perhaps I overlooked it... Good luck :)

Good for you.
Did you ever find out what happened to the drive? Youd be suprised what could happen to a hard drive. For example:
I once had upgraded from a 1gb drive to a IBM 60gb drive (and promptly filled it with 30gb of stuff ). One day I come home and it would'nt boot. I take the cover off and heard *click whiiirrrr click click click* (I found out it was called the click of death  ). After much screaming and a few calls to my friends I took it out and went back to a 1 gb. After the relization that it was never going to be fixed without lots of money, a friend improvised a clean "area" and took it apart and found out the bottom platter (hard drives have multiple metal surfaces called platters) had shattered! Completely, it was in pieces. To this day, I still have no idea what caused it.

i had my 30GB HDD blow after 4 months... the good thing about that was it was still under warantee :)

and by a stroke of luck Hewlitt Packard didnt produce my original HDD anymore so i got an upgrade to 40GB, that should cost £215 + labour free of charge...

i was a happy bunny...

hey hows this for one in a million chance 2 hard drives die at once...first died after 10 months....the other after 2 days of replacing the first...hehe

good thing is they are both under warranty...lucky for me (the first was a seagate 20gigs the other an ibm 30gig.....) the first had a read error could only read the first 20 megs of the drive (grind..grind).....and the second had a seek error(would detect on boot and work one day and the next day wouldnt detect at all....these drives stink  8O

i now have a 30gig drive that cross fingers will last a life time....(still ibm ponder ponder  :D

I hear they are very reliable drives, I know lots of people who use them, including modders/overclockers, and they only usually buy the best stuff :)
