Abyss Web Server development is mainly done by a very very small team made of experienced programmers. Abyss (as a project) is now 3 years old.
We hope this gives you an estimation about the time/workforce to build something like Abyss

I can't help but to maybe steer this topic off course. Aprelium, why not make Abyss open source again? I believe it's a win win situation in the free software world

I would also like to know if you or your team decides not to make it open source again, why not? Its sort of the only thing about Abyss which is driving me away... Thank you for your input on this :)

This one I have to comment on... 8)

Well, maybe it's a win win situation in the free software world if everybody goes open source, but if Aprelium are planing to make any money on this great software... they shouldn't go there. In fact, I hope they soon release a version that is not free.

I would reconsider "version that is not free". If it were not free, I do not think alot of personal website will be available. This make up of alot of user for Abyss. Not everyone can afford to pay. Maybe start a donation... but not require to pay.

I don't think Aprelium should discontinue their free version, but I want to see a shareware (professional) version of some sort... with features not included in the freeware version. So that they hopefully can make some money of this software.

Or they can try the same way as Rhinosoft for Serv-U FTP. The software can be download for trial base in full Pro edition util 30 days. Then it auto downgrade to personal edition. Those extra feature that Pro have will be disable when it become personal edition. When the time the user get register and enter the registeration from Aprelium, they can enter the registeration into the software and will become Pro edition again. This way, there no two separate editon where user will get confuse.

BTW, out of curiosity.... Is there other product out there that turning revenue or just Abyss only from Aprelium?

As promised before, there will alsways be a personal version of Abyss released as freeware.
The professional version won't be free but will include features specific for professional web serving.
We have nothing against open-source. It's good in theory, but in practice, it can't help us make money. Open-source is OK if students and non-profit organization use it. But consider that major companies use it without paying a cent! The first version of Abyss Web Server (which used to be open-source) is still integrated by dozens of such companies in their products (software or hardware). They are making money from it but we have nothing in return, not even the name of Abyss mentionned.

We're an independant and privately held company (no large group, no venture capitals). People working at Aprelium are those who funded it.
May be we're utopists, but we believe in our product and we're working hard to release a professional version that will compensate those two year with no earnings.

Their are other ways of making money I see companys give away one free program but makes other cooler projects for a fee.Maybe Aprelium can do the same. Keep Abyss Free and work on other projects that cost a fee.

So there no earning for two years.... Humm...... How you or anyone there in Aprelium survive? By drinking out of bottle of water or facet? Is the Aprelium server is connecting out of a hidden in a secret hidden room from a powerplant company that they do not know about or forgotten? There no way a company can run thing or operate without some kind of $$$ unless it is out of your own pocket and have a second job to compensate. :D
