I run the Simple Machines forum on one of my sites, replacing an irretrievably corrupted IPB system. Recently a user pointed out that he cannot change his avatar, every time he tries to save his personal profile he gets an Error 500.

I get the same problem.

(PHP is popping up an error dialogue on the Windows desktop, which is also annoying - how can I make those go away?)

I had the same issue on PHP4 on the old server, and having moved it today to a new box using PHP5, it's still doing it.

Does anyone else use SMF? This is a fairly annoying problem. The rest of the forum works just fine, it's only the profile page that suffers.

Simple Machines, I never heard of them. Basically if the person is having a problem changing his avatar, usually means theres a file corrupted in the system, not the server, the forum software. What type of forums are you using, phpBB?

It doesn't matter if I change the avatar or not, any attempt to save the profile page gives the error.

It's a Simple Machines forum.

I'm not familiar with SMF, but let me figure out something from SMF. I think they give a guide or support for this type of problem, i'm sure, but go check and be sure. I use phpBB for forums, and i had no problem with that. Works perfectly.

Are you running your own server, or are you using a hosting?

well I Installed SMF on my server, i dont see a way to change the avatar. PHPBB allows you to change the avatars. I recommend phpBB forums dude, easy to install, with no problem.

view my site you'll see what I mean

I appreciate your ceaseless attempts to help, Nucca, but I'm not going to run PHPBB. It lacks a lot of features that I rely on with SMF (like RSS feeds).

You CAN change your avatar: go to Profile, and click on Forum Profile Information.

As I said though, it's got nothing to do with avatars, and everything to do with saving the profile page.

then what i would do is do a database backup ,save the sql file on your computer, then emtpy or drop the database in ur sql server. If you deleted the database recreate it, if u didnt delete, just leave. Reinstall the SMF like u did in the beginning when u first had it, then upload the sql database file into the server through the SMF.

Thats how i did it when i had a problem with the NukeSentinel on my phpnuke site, reinstalled, uploaded the sql file and everything weas recovered very quickly.

Try it see if it works

ADDED - what php version are you using?

He merged them.

SMF is very good, I'd recommend it over phpBB, its modification and theme system is awesome. And a mod called TinyPortal makes it way more awesome.

I use SMF and have never run into this problem. I haven't installed it on my server though.

I installed it on mine, never gave me a problem with none of the profile settings. Unless the it wasnt installed correctly, which can cause many errors to be honest.

I know he isn't using phpbb forums. Its probably it wasn't installed correctly in the database of the SQL server, which is uncommon if the person doesn't know what he/she is doing....:P

The problem is still going on. Everything else works, but this one page. I've re-uploaded the PHP file from the SMF archive to no avail. =(

I'm going to ask this again.....Are you running your own server or are you using a hosting to run your forums?

Okay what I will do is reinstall the SMF on my webserver. Plus tell what theme your are using, because sometimes the themes are badly scripted.

well I installed the simple machines forum with the theme you are using and it works fine to me. So what I'm thinking is that the SQl server is glitched or scripted badly(if your running your own server). That is possible.

If you're using a hosting, their SQL server could be badly scripted as well, which is very uncommon for them.

I have the theme installed on my server and plus the SMF on there too. Its linked below...

Sometimes the php.ini file isnt configured right. What is the execute time on your php.ini file(if u are running your own server)?

You're right, it works just fine for you. This makes three things that don't work right on my server that work just fine for everyone else (see broken pipe and Gallery2 threads). I'm rather frustrated by this - I'm using the aprelium PHP5 package, with no changes to php.ini, so the problem's gotta be in the abyss CONF file. =/

I think Aprilum's php5 preconfigured package is 5.2.2 which has problems. Go to http://abyssunderground.co.uk to get the 5.2.4. And the CONF file isnt the problem. its the php package u gotten from aprelium.

The reason I upgraded to 5 was 'cause 4 didn't work either. I don't think that's the cause.

I installed SMF with no problems. I'm using PHP 5.2.4 and MySQL 5.

This is the frustrating part: I'm using default installations and getting errors that no one else gets. With a brand new copy of X2 and a brand new download of Aprelium's approved PHP package.

As for MySQL, it's V. 12.22, distrib 4.0.17

From the command line I did mysql -V.

If you would like me to check the version some other way, please let me know what it is.

I have solved the problem. Basically, it was a character set issue. I had to export the old system in LATIN1 (mysql didn't support UTF8 until 4.1.x, I was using 4.0.x) and import it into 5 using UTF8. Then, aside from some little niggling problems with a missing table or two, it was clear sailing.

So, if anyone else runs into this:

I used mysql's Migration Toolkit to import the data directly from the live old system into the live new system. When you get to the OBJECT MAPPING stage, you can hit the ADVANCED tab to set the correct import/export charsets.

Geez, what an ordeal. Glad it's done now!
