Community Protest! - [My contribution]

This has continued to be one of my "pet" projects for many years.
I am not one to join forums, except for here and there -- I enjoy direct interaction.
I joined this end of the Shareaza forum due to the theft of the Shareaza name, brand and copyright. I believe in fair play, as I expect you do too.

I felt that this example would touch home on this forum...
This is not a question of whether you support P2P or not, rather, this represents an attack on open-source developers and software.

I am a software developer. You must understand the implication of not supporting open-source engineers. If corporate interests continue to bully, threaten and win, independent open-source software developers will simply give up. Shareaza is not the first, and the death of Shareaza and free P2P will set a precedent! I dare not develop a fair and free public, open-source alternative to "for-profit" offerings for fear of becoming too popular, suffering the wrath of this new model "corporate internet." I remember when the internet was free and innovative; and a public model for free communication and exchange [...]

If this is inappropriate, then I apologize -- just remove this topic. If you care about the future of open-source, then pay us a visit at Shareaza.
I have no affiliation with the P2P offerings, however, I do understand our loss if this is not challenged.

Thanks!

I read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shareaza#Domain_takeover_.2F_transfer

That's just plain wrong. I hope they can get it back somehow.

Hahaha, trademarks in the Internet age. Unless it's Coke, Pepsi, IBM or Microsoft, the trademark would have a big problem having a global reach.

I've read the interesting bits on Wikipedia, and subsequently MGM vs Grokster, which was cited as something related to the issue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM_Studios,_Inc._v._Grokster,_Ltd. That was a very sad result in the history of the "freedomness" of Internet and the technology that drives it.

http://www.shareazasecurity.be/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=1070 gives a good intro to the stories behind this controversy. RIAA is implicitly at work here, imo. I share in the spirit of loss on the part of Shareaza's community. However, I do not share in the methodology of their p2p systems - kind of a panacea approach to p2p and media player - to me it smells/reeks like Microsoft and its alleged antitrust practices.

Bundling is never a good way to go.

Thanks for responding guys!
I used Direct Connect peers and Torrents years ago. My use was more for sharing in collaboration. Sure, I took a song or two... but like you, if I like it I buy it!

I've been watching this kind of crap since the late 90s -- and it stinks! I just felt the time was right to make a stand.

I updated my earlier post.

Take care and talk with you soon :)
