Linux on it, any good FREE Linux(es) that run Abyss Web Server smoothley, PHP (not ASP.NET or ASP), other Linux able languages.

The machine is a Compaq Presario (HP) and is Linux compatible.
Built with WinXP pre-installed and WinVista evaluation went wrong, so I want to install a free, open source version of Unix, which is Linux, but I want a simple Linux, just to use a Web Server.

Any suggestions and help?
ASAP!

Get Ubuntu.
It's probably the smoothest Linux distro.

Ubuntu vs openSUSE, which one?
Ok Ubuntu server looks good, I will remove cr*p Apache from LAMP first.
Also, how do I burn an ISO file to a disc without an OS?

ubuntu is good. it is what I use on a couple computers at my house. PCLinuxOS is supposedly pretty good too, but I haven't tried it. fedora is really good but is a bit bloated.

just install wine and all the suggested FTP servers on this site should work, but i'm not 100% sure on that. it doesn't matter about if it is apache or abyss since a ftp server is completely seperate from a http server. I use Filezilla on windows, but I haven't tried to run it in wine. Some servers that are made for linux are: PureFTPd, CrushFTP, and CrossFTP

Any Linux distribution will fit the bill. Abyss Web Server requirements are pretty light and it only requires components that are available in any Linux based system (even those that are on 2 floppies): the Linux Kernel and the standard GLibc.
