Can someone step by step explain to me how abyss really works. I have completely gone through this web server. I have purchased X2. I have followed the tutorials and still for the last three weeks have gotten nothing to work. I have a root directory. Do I have to use the same root directory? Does abyss have to see the original index.html or can I make a new directory? I am frustrated. I do not believe the ports are blocked by my comcast IP. I even ran a test today to make sure my new port configuration is not blocked. Does my webpage have to orignate in the root directory of abyss? Please help. |

rwari3,
You need to read the "Getting Started" guide. You can find it in the Start menu , in the Abyss Web Server folder. Basically, you put your files in the htdocs folder to let Abyss Web Server serve them over the internet, using your IP Addrerss or Sub/Top Level Domain (yoursite.com etc.). By the way, Comcast doesn't really allow you to host your own server.
This site tells you who allows it (Look at the "ISP Hot List").

You IP Address can be found here:
http://www.aprelium.com/ip/ or http://www.abyssunderground.co.uk/ip.php
Kind regards, Josh

nope, you can set it to other places but it defaults to /Abyss Web Server/htdocs directory, and unless you really want to keep it there since otherwise it can makes things alot more confusing when first starting out with a webserver.
this is all in that getting started guide stated in TRUSTAbyss' post _________________

It appears that you don't have port 80 properly forwarded or the server isn't running. _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

I have port 80 forwarded in my router. It is a Linksys. And according to the test port 80 is open. And on my server it does say that port 80 is 'running'. What do you make of this? |

Well, port 80 is open but do you have it forwarded to your server? (Needs to be forwarded to the internal/LAN IP address of your server computer.) _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

Try typing in your IP address --> http://68.35.113.81
If the HTTP request is making it to the server, you'll either see your page or get a 404 response from the server.
If you get the message that "Server cannot be found" or some variation, then the request is not getting to Abyss.
The problem could be the internet, your server's computer, or anywhere between.
I'm guessing the router. If you could post an image to imageshack.us and let us see your port forwarding setup, that would help. You can learn more about port forwarding at http://portforward.com _________________ Stephen

Hello. Here is what I have. I went and typed in the external IP. The page did not show. Here is a snapshot of my port forwarding. Tell me from there. Thanks for the assistance.

Assuming you just have a blank webpage for your site, it works fine for me. I think the issue is that your router doesn't support loopback, so you cannot view your website through your external IP. Try viewing it through http://192.168.1.103. _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

rwari3,
Your IP seems to respond on port 80 but does not return a page. This is probably because the sites you have declared have host names associated with them.
Have you setup your domain names to be associated with your IP address? What are the host names configured in your server? _________________ Follow @abyssws on Twitter

rwari, if you send Aprelium your abyss.conf file, they would be able to help you even more. Or you can PM me with it and I'll help you.
It's certainly a very weird problem! _________________ Stephen

I've tired running a server identification tool on your ip address. However, it fails as the server didn't respond with the server header.
Full output (ID Serve) wrote: | Initiating server query ...
Looking up the domain name for IP: 68.35.113.81
The domain name for the IP address is: c-68-35-113-81.hsd1.nm.comcast.net
Connecting to the server on standard HTTP port: 80
[Connected] Requesting the server's default page.
The server's response did not contain the expected 'Server:' header to identify itself. Therefore, server's identity can not be determined.
Query complete. |

rwari should be up and running soon. He set his domains to run on a different port. _________________ Stephen

I want to give a big thank you to all who posted to my need. I was in a conundrum. I simply removed the :XX port extension for each host. Now it is working just fine. Abyss is great. You are all a big help. Great forum work. Thanks. Rwari3. |
