Is there a way to speed my Abyss server up?
People are complaining that my site is taking to long to load.
Its not got any big files on it :?
Is it just there internet connection?
But if there is a way of speeding the server up, please let me know :D
Thanks |

Internet connection is the main culprit, then server speed.
Images can also be a problem. Make sure they are web optimised to be as small as possible. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

It is probably your server's internet connection, could you run a test? _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

speedtest.net is a very bad speed test site. You are better off finding somewhere you can download a very large file as fast as possible with multiple connections and also find an open FTP server and upload a large file to determine your maximum upload speed. However speedtest.net is an easier but less accurate way of finding your speed. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Its only accurate if:
1. You're close to the site of the server you test from
2. The server has sufficient bandwidth to give you your lines max speed
and it also isn't multi-threaded meaning you only get the speed one connection can handle, which in most cases isn't much. Which is why its more accurate to do a speed test by downloading a huge file with as many as 10 connections. Testing upload is the hardest part as you have to find an open FTP server to do it from or take a risk on the bad speedtest. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Well, speedtest.net is a pretty decent test, its better than many I've used. But you are right, it can only be so accurate. He should still run one though, so that we can get an idea of what kind of upload he has. _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

If he is to run it, I would pretty much disregard the download speed. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

The download speed isn't important, we just want to know his approximate upload speed. _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

Its a flash application that connects to the server you select and transfers a random piece of data to and from you as fast as possible to get your speed result. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Its got nothing to do with your server, its the server you click on closest to your location that it does the test from. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

The reason you should run some kind of speed test is so that we can find out your approximate upload speed...this will help us know if the reason for a long load is your internet connection. _________________ -Blake | New Server :D

Not just that but the fact the server might not have enough bandwidth for you to check your maximum speed, its single threaded, the route the server and you might be bad... Many reasons and thats why downloading a file from a respectable source such as M$ or a file inside your ISP's network using multiple threads is a better test of the speed your line is capable of. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
