After more than four months testing the first Beta, we are happy to release Beta 2 of the upcoming Abyss Web Server version 2.12.

New major features in the upcoming 2.12:

This new version features support for automatically requesting, fetching, and installing free SSL/TLS certificates from ACME certification authorities such as Let's Encrypt.
It also improves reverse-proxying by adding support for HTTPS back-ends.
Users of the free edition X1 will also enjoy the support for dual hosting on both HTTP and HTTPS. This feature was previously only available in the professional edition X2.

Differences between Beta 2 and Beta 1:

  • Beta 2 is major step forward in improving new macOS versions support while maintaining legacy support for old Macs (see more details below.)
  • Beta 2 for Linux adds support for distributions based on a 'systemd' init system. The autostart-setup script has been updated accordingly and should now install Abyss Web Server as a service on almost any Linux distribution.
  • Beta 2 fixes a minor but annoying bug with ACME support when requesting wildcard certificate from Let's Encrypt. The bug consisted in an infinite wait for a new wildcard certificate after properly requesting it.
  • Beta 2 adds a new field "Debugging Label" to URL rewriting rules. Such a label, if defined, will be added in the URL rewriting log to help locate the rules as they are listed and reported (feature suggested by one of our customers.)
  • When defining a new custom logging format, Beta 2 fills it with items mimicking the combined log format (feature suggested by one of our long time customers.)

About the Mac edition:

  • Abyss Web Server is now one of the rare software to support MacOS X 10.4 on PowerPC or Intel 32-bit up to the most recent macOS Mojave on Intel 64-bit.
  • The new version ships as a 3-architecture Universal Binary (32-bit PowerPC, 32-bit Intel and 64-bit Intel.)
  • It is also signed with our Apple Developer ID which helps remove any firewall restrictions especially on the new macOS Mojave.
  • Dark mode support on the new Mojave is still not ready. Hopefully, it will make it in the final version.

Get the new Beta 2:

Please do not use this test release if you are not familiar with Abyss Web Server.

Installation and upgrading instructions are exactly the same as those available in http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/download.php .

Please send us your bug reports and feedback to support@aprelium.com .

Note to X2 users:

Beta 2 is available upon request for X2 customers. Please contact our priority technical support to enable Beta access for your user account.

Important notes:

  • When upgrading from a previous version or Beta, we recommend that you backup a copy of your old abyss.conf file.
  • The documentation shipping with the preview is updated and describes all the new features in detail.
  • Beta 2's internal version is 2.11.20. This is not a mistake.

Disclaimer:

This Beta is not suitable for production environments. Use it only for test purposes. Do not distribute it. This is not the final product and it may be unstable or contain bugs.

Your feedback is important to us:

We're eagerly waiting for any feedback from you:

  • Please let us know how the main new features worked for you (ACME support + HTTPS support in reverse-proxy + dual-hosting on X1.) Your take on their user interface is also welcome.
  • If you are using the macOS version, please let us know how the whole software worked for you on your OS (especially if it is a modern Mojave or a very old PowerPC-based one.)
  • If you are on Linux, please let us know how the new autostart-setup script worked for you.

Thank you for supporting Abyss Web Server.
