I have a cgi app that runs fine on Abyss but not on IIS and I am looking for a web host that uses Abyss.
This is a special interest, non-commercial, application which will attract hundreds rather than thousands so the demands on bandwidth will be minimum.
I am located in the UK.
Regards

Hello,
I do not know of any commercial hosts that use Abyss. Have you tried hosting this site yourself? Some broadband lines can be fast enough to run sites with just hundreds of visitors (Ive proven this myself with only 0.4Mbps upload) _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Really!? How difficult is it to set up and administer? I'm on pipex dsl which theoretically has plenty of bandwidth. I presume that one needs a dedicated server? I'm in a bit of a hurry to get it set up as its part of an ongoing campaign (Save Our Waterways) so I might not have the luxury of time to get on a learning curve.
Thanks for your input
Cheers

I assume you've got Abyss up and running with your CGI application since you say it works on Abyss and not IIS.
The only thing you really need to do is opening port 80 in your router and get a domain name pointed to your IP-address with an A-record.
You probably should get a dedicated server if you don't want your desktop computer turned on 24/7. |

1. Portforward your pc to port 80 in your router.
2. Get a no-ip.com dynamic dns address (Im sure pipex is dynamic)
3. Link your domain to the no-ip address using a CNAME
Check your upload speed as this is the most important part of your connection. www.speedtest.net and/or http://speedtest.bbmax.co.uk will tell you your upload speed. Mine is 400Kbps (0.4Mbps) and I run a few fairly active sites just fine (averaging about 100Kbps bandwidth excluding peaks).
Also check that pipex allows servers to be run on their connections. You may be fined or disconnected if they do not allow it and they catch you doing it. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
