I am a newbie to Abyss, having 3 days experience. The problem I am having is that when I run a test script (<? phpinfo(); ?>) I am asked for a password. When I enter the password I set up at the install stage I get a "No Access Allowed" page. Help please.

Are you accessing Abyss Web Server from a Local Address, or are you accessing it from your external IP Address? It could be your Router's setup page that is popping up. Have a look at this small tutorial to fix it.

Using your domain name for local tests:

I have tried to set up my pc up as a local server. The reason being is that I want to write a website using either PHP or ASP. I was testing it to see if I had set everything up correctly. I guess I haven't. Anyway, I type http://localhost/test.php in the address bar.

That is when I got the problems.

You probably Password Protected the whole website by accident. Do you get an Abyss Web Server error page if you hit cancel at the login?

I cannot remenber protecting anything in particular. It asked me for a username and password which I typed in. These are the ones I typed when trying to test the php file mentioned above. As for cancelling at the login, there is no cancel button.

Maybe you could post a screenshot at http://imageshack.us/ for us. Show the dialog where you're prompted for a password.

To do this:
1. Press 'Print Screen'
2. Open paint
3. Edit -> Paste
4. Save as PNG or JPG
5. Upload to http://imageshack.us/

Sorry about the wait, I have bean working overtime (daughter needs a new piano, not exactly cheap).

Anyway, what I get is the standard login screen followed by the "entry forbidden" screen. The passwords I have used on the login screen are the same as I entered at the setup stage.

I have tried to re-install the software and ommiting the password etc. without success.

Hello Gerry,

I'm not sure why this is happening. It might be better if you re-install Abyss Web Server and try again, or if you're interested, I can help you fix this over my Windows/MSN Messenger.

OK, I will reinstall it again. Could you tell me first, is there a way to bypass the login? I want the server for web development only and don't really want to go through the login process every time I run a PHP or ASP file.

There should be no login screen if its set up properly. This is why you should reinstall. Remove the conf file when you do this too to be sure it does not use data from it.

Did you delete the conf file before you reinstalled?

Did you install fresh when you first installed? If not you will need to get rid of the conf file (like abyyssunderground said) and maybe the other stuff (which are lgos and such) and reinstall completly from scratch (i recomend uninstalling AWS then deleting the folder then reinstall the most recent folder)

ALSO as a side note, have php5 installed and working properly with AWS

http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php5win.html (Windows)
http://www.aprelium.com/abyssws/php.html (Linux, mac, ETC....)

In answer to both your questions, I uninstalled the software, deleted the entire directory (just to make sure) then reinstalled from the downloaded file.

PHP5 was setup correctly prior to the uninstall but not since the reinstall.

Just to be sure, do you get this when using your external IP and not localhost? Or do you get it on both localhost, LAN ip and external IP?

If it is external IP only, you're getting the login of your router. If not, then Im not sure what it could be. Make sure your hosts file hasnt been modified.

It happens with : http://localhost/test.php and 127.0.0.1/test.php, I do not know (have forgotten) my other ip address.

It has just occurred to me that prior to installing Abyss I had Apache running. Obviously I removed Apache before installing Abyss, but maybe this had an effect?

Maybe you've found something here...

If Apache was running at the same time as Abyss, Abyss would not be able to listen on port 80. That would show you the error in the console (http://localhost:9999) and the system tray icon would be blinking red.

Both programs will not interfere with each other in installation, but will if trying to run them at the same time. So, just close Apache down and start Abyss.

I think you misunderstood me. Prior to installing Abyss I had Apached. I removed Apache first then installed Abyss. I did not have this problem with Apache.

Something else is running on port 80 to cause this problem. If you have a fresh install of Abyss then there are no password problems. Are you sure you're not trying to access the console instead? This would be on port 9999 not 80.

If you still can't get it, add me on msn and if you like I can remote desktop to you and give you support from there.

Hi there, I have examined my pc and cannot find anything occupying port 80. There maybe an issue where by I am trying to log onto the consul. However, this is being done when I am trying to test my PHP connection.

Also, even if I wanted to log onto the consul, the logon procedure is not letting me get there (it locks me out even with the correct password). Perhaps I should just forget Abyss. It has given me problems from the start and I am not that impressed with it !!!

OK, starting right from the top, can you explain once again the problem you are having, and what you have tried to rectify it? Abyss is a very simple program to use so I cannot understand why you are having such issues.

Please give me the following information:
1. Did you start with a fresh install of Abyss?
2. What version of PHP are you running and how are you running it? (CGI/FastCGI)
3. How are you accessing your files? Localhost (127.0.0.1), LAN IP (192.168.x.x) or WAN IP (Your public internet IP)?
4. Did you edit anything else in the Abyss console except the scripting parameters?

Once I have this information I should be able to explain what the problem is.

Hi there, In answer to your questions:
1. Abyss was installed fresh. I had Apache installed prior to this but this was completely removed before Abyss was installed.
2. I am running PHP 5 as CGI.
3. So far I have only attempted to test using PHP by typing "http://localhost/test.php" (this is where I get the password problem).
4. I installed PHP according to the installation instructions on your site.

Try opening the Abyss window. Does it say something like this?
Quote:
-- Default host on port 80 is up and running (Local URL http://127.0.0.1)
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999

If it says there is a listening problem, you have another web server up and running. Are you sure you have not installed IIS by mistake?

Try to shutdown Abyss and access 127.0.0.1. Are you still getting the login screen?

To absolutely tell which web server is giving you the trouble, check your Abyss access.log. Do you see attempts to get to test.php resulting in an error? (A success HTTP header is 200.)

Also, you might get ieHTTPHeaders, a program that will show you HTTP headers in real time. One HTTP header is "Server". Then you'll see if it's Apache, IIS, or Abyss.
Website --> http://www.blunck.se/iehttpheaders/iehttpheaders.html
Direct Download --> http://stephen.calvarybucyrus.org/redirect.php?file=ieHTTPHeaders

This is the text in the Abyss window:

Abyss Web Server X1 (v 2.4)
Copyright © Aprelium Technologies - 2001-2007

-- Default host on port 8000 is up and running (Local URL http://127.0.0.1:8000)
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999

As you can see it is "bog standard" and nothing unusual. I have switched Abyss off and typed in the http:127.0.0.1/test.php also http://localhost/test.php with the same effect. That is, I get a page saying that the web page is unavailable etc...

Have you tried http://127.0.0.1:8000 ? It says right there it is running on port 8000 and not 80.

I have tried:

http://270.0.0.1/test.php,
http://270.0.0.1/8000/test.php,
270.0.0.1/test.php,
270.0.0.1/8000/test.php,
http://localhost/test.php
localhost/test.php,
localhost/8000/test.php

I think thats all? Anyway, as you can see, I have tried just about everything I can think of, all to no avail.

You got the IP wrong, it should be 127.0.0.1

Also you use / instead of : when defining a port. It should be 127.0.0.1:8000

Just don't forget the "http://" when using a port. Internet Explorer will give a syntax error page if you don't.

Example: http://127.0.0.1:8000/test.php

Yes, I can see the mistakes I made. However, when I changed them, I still come up against the logon process. I cannot get further than the "access denied" screen.

Hi there, ever since I had problems using Abyss the help you have offer ed has been excellent. However, you did ask me to add your name to my MSM which I did (see above).

I did this over two weeks ago. Since then I have heard nothing, not a sausage, bugger all (despite me leaving my PC on for 72 hours solid).

Can I asume that:
a) You have been on a holiday,
b) you have attemted to do a fix but for some reason couldn't or
c) you have lost interest in my problem?

I really would like an answer from you. I am at a stage where I would prefer to remove Abyss and reinstall Apache.

Perhaps. I am just getting bored of not being able to do anything. This, I would have thought, was a straight forward problem for an expert.

Good luck, Gerry Atrick. I hope you are able to lick your problem.

Allow me to provide additional insights to mitigate other problems. After you installed Abyss normally (in Windows, I assume), you would see the Abyss icon from your Windows system tray. Double click on it.

You mentioned you got as far as seeing
Code:
-- Default host on port 8000 is up and running (Local URL http://127.0.0.1:8000)
Console local URL: http://127.0.0.1:9999

The next time this comes up, try highlighting and copying the http://127.0.0.1:8000 part instead, then paste it on your browser's address bar.

From a fresh Abyss install with no customizations yet, you should get the fresh Abyss install welcome screen. Put your test.php file in
C:\Program Files\Abyss Web Server\htdocs
then enable PHP from http://127.0.0.1:9999 by getting instructional help from the console and everything should work by this time without the mysterious password box as you browse http://127.0.0.1:8000/test.php.

Unfortunetly it is a problem with your setup which is stopping it from working. Many hundreds of thousands of people have it working just fine.
