.

Hi all..
New to Abyss...but not new to server set ups..
I've done quite a few...and I run a streaming server
currently for my web radio station..

However,
I have a few questions that kind of
cover a few different areas about Abyss
...so I'll post them here..

I have Abyss X1 2.4 installed along with the preconfig'd
PHP5 package (well done with that.. btw)
on a WinXP Pro PC.
Everythings working fine so far..
excellent even..

I attempted to install MySQL (4.1.22)
and MyPhpAdmin (2.8.0.3) following
a tutorial I found posted here.

Unfortunately I had no success..
I'm not exactly sure what went wrong as I
did not get any errors or anything...
just blank pages when trying to view any
pages that should have been there ..
:-s

So..after spending most of Saturday
working on this..
I ended up un-installing MySQL and
MyPhpAdmin in order to start from scratch.

My questions are:
What is the best configuration for these 2
applications
(what versions work best with the other... and with Abyss)
and do I need to do any reg. edits to start with a clean install
for both..
(The server and PHP are working fine, so I don't believe I
need to do anything with that...or do I?)

And..
Where might I find the best installation and config.
info. to set all of this up correctly?
I've seen a couple of tutorials here...or linked to here...
and tried following them with close attention to detail..
without success.

Thanks,
Rod

Hello,

I find PHP4 and MySQL4.0.24 work best together. Visit www.abyssunderground.co.uk for tutorials on how to set them both up.

Andy,
Thanks for the prompt reply..
I did have a look at your instructions..
and I must say they are well written and
very detailed..
kudos to you..(thumbs up)

However,
I have found many of the PHP scripts that
I am currently running on other hosters...
will not run on PHP4
(I installed that 1st actually, then went with the pre-config'd
v.5 offered by Abyss)

This set up is running all my scripts perfectly..

I would just like to have a database mainly for
album cover art to link in to the station home page
for "Now Playing" data..
MySQL seems to be the only option for this..
that I'm aware of..

Use php5 and MySQL4.1 if you must use php5. This seems to be a good combination.

Man ... :-s
I went thru both tutorials posted by Victor
on this and re-did it all... step by step..

no joy..

I still am getting 404 pages when trying to pull up
http://localhost/phpMyAdmin

I must be doing something wrong... I dunno..

Any assistance would be appreciated..
Victor?

A 404 means it cannot find the file. Are you sure you put it in the right place and are using the correct folder name?

Yeah.. I went through everything...
Victors tutorials and I looked at yours as well for config. info..
I have made some progress it appears however..
when I load up
http://my-domain-path/phpMyAdmin/

I now see a "phpMyAdmin - Error
Cannot load mysql extension.
Please check your PHP configuration. - Documentation"

(a red banner across the top of a blank page)

I gotta tell ya though.... I understand the whole concept of this..
the folder paths and config files.. opening ports and all that..
but it's really becoming more of a pain than what it's worth it seems..
I'm sure it's probaby something simple..

I've added your MSN ID to my list.. (ghostriderxp@gmail.com)
If you get a few minutes ...perhaps I can send you some screenys
or config files to get a look at..

Thanks again for your replies..

K...did that.. same result as posted above.. ^^^
:-s

Do I need to re-start Abyss and / or MySQL
after that edit..?

also worth noting..
When I launch MySQL and go through that wizard..
it's successful...but... I never get a green light icon
in the tray... or any icon for MySQL for that matter..

could that be an issue?
it says it's running and all...once the wizard finish's

To check if MySQL is running on v4.1, go into control panel, admin tools, services, and look for MySQL, look next to it and it will say if it is started or not.

Try another PHP version if you are having problems with the extension. The preconfigured packages from aprelium will work (Available on my site on the php tutorial page). Remember php4 for mysql4.0.24 and php5 for mysql4.1.

Sorry,
perhaps I was'nt clear on what versions I currently have installed..
I am running MySQL 4.1
and the preconfigured PHP5
and phpMyAdmin 2.10.0.2

Still unable to discover the problem(s)

On a side note..

I've been looking around all morning for solutions...
and I'm considering abandoning this effort and
installing a program I located on
the MySQL home page called
MySQL GUI Tools
Links:
http://www.mysql.com/products/tools/ (descriptions)
And..
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/gui-tools/5.0.html (downloads)

This app. appears to be able to allow me to
manage MySQL outside of the
Abyss Server (and phpMyAdmin)

What do you think?

After all.. your running 2 servers either way...
MySQL thru Abyss/phpMyAdmin or
MySQL as a "stand alone" server

correct?

I do appreciate your help..
I've been in the IT business a long time
and I've set up hundreds of servers..
ie: WinServer 2000/2003, Exchange Server & using active directory... Streaming content servers of all types..
and all that goes along with that..

NONE have ever been this complicated..
(that I can remember)

Interested in your opinions on the alternative
I mentioned above for managing MySQL..
(GUI Tools)

.

Update to this...

For those following this and maybe wondering...
"ok...how did he solve this problem..?"

I went ahead and un-installed MySQL 4.1
and all of it's associated files and folders
created during the installation / intigration process
described in the tutorial
published by Victor (vbgunz)
located in these forums
HERE

Un-installed (deleted) all files / folders associated with
phpMyAdmin created during the installation / intigration process
described in the tutorial
published by Victor (vbgunz) located
HERE

Then...

Used a very cool freeware program called CCleaner
to scan the registry for any keys left behind
and removed them (be sure to create a back-up when prompted)
CCleaner can be downloaded HERE

Restarted machine

Downloaded, installed
MySQL Community Server 5.0

Downloaded, installed
MySQL Tools 5.0

MySQL is now up and running with new slick and powerful GUI..
{:-)

I do have one final question though..
Not knowing a lot about MySQL yet..

How do I intigrate MySQL into Abyss Server ?
(ie: any generated databases that I make in the future)

I'm assuming I can do this using the "Aliases"
tool in Abyss Server... by simply pointing to the
MySQL data folder...yes?

Thanks..

No, you will need to use a server side scripting language, such as PHP. Abyss does not interact with the database server directly, you must access the data using a script.

You can either write a custom one for yourself, or download a prewritten bespoke solution.

Can I just point out that most tutorials on the forum are outdated. You should use the tutorials from my website, www.abyssunderground.co.uk/tutorials.php (which has screenshots etc) or www.trustabyss.com (which are very basic but do the job but do not contain all the tutorials I have).

You will need PHP and MySQL installed. Follow the two tutorials on my site.

These two go best together.

PHP Version 4 and MySQL Version 4.0.24
or
PHP Version 5 and MySQL Version 4.1

Hmmm...AbyssUnderground...
Pls. don't feel that I don't appreciate your help because I do
...however..
I get the feeling that

(A)
You are not even reading and / or comprehending my messages....
I've provided detailed information on my problem throughout this topic
AND the solution that I elected to go with..
if you read them you would see that..
Or..

(B)
You are simply attempting to drive visitor traffic to your website
for some unknown reason..

(I say this because you are repeating yourself here and not even
responding to the actual details or questions put forth in my messages)
(no offense bro....honest.... nothing personal..
it's just a little annoying to see what appears to me to be a
"generic reply" to me... repeated throughout the topic..)

Anyway...moving forward....
All of the above is a done deal at this point..

And For olly...
I'm not proficient enough with .PHP to compile a script
to do as you indicated..
Are you aware of any available that I may be able to use?

 (it would be a nice thing to see Aprelium support post to this topic...)

Thanks..
Rock On..

G.

It will depend on what you want the script to do. For example you could have a forum like this one (from: http://phpbb.com. A CMS (Content Management System) (eg: e107, from http://e107.org.

You can find many more from sites such as hotscripts.com, or even a web search (ie: Google).

GHOSTRIDER,

I am pointing you to my website because it has the tutorials to get what you want working, IF you follow them exactly as they are on the site. I get enough visitors on it already, it doesn't need promoting in that way.

Also I have been answering your questions in your posts. Unfortunately it has not got us anywhere yet.

I suggest that you take everything off, and start right from the beginning in this order:

1. Install Abyss
2. Install PHP
3. Install MySQL
4. Install phpMyAdmin

And see where you get.

You really aren't reading his posts are you? The ending comment in one of his posts is that MySQL is working correctly!! He has now gone on to ask how to display content stored in his database on his website. Telling him to uninstall / reinstall the servers will not help with this question.

I did read his post but he did it a very different way to me which is why I suggested he read my tutorials.

I see my help is not needed in this topic.

Thanks for the suggestion,
I think I'll stick to this config..
for now anyway... it's working perfectly..

As I said..
I was'nt attacking you...and if you are offended...
it was certainly not my intention..

I'll close this discussion with a friendly suggestion to you my friend..
If you are going to reply to people's topics here..
you really should read what they are posting carefully...

Have a close look at this entire thread... and perhaps you will
understand what I mean..

Thanks again though man... and be cool..

and ty olly.. I'll check that out..

In case you didn't notice I did read your posts but you ignored any help I suggested and continued using forum posts even though they are outdated. I continued to repeat myself to give you your best chance at succeeding.

Also, one little suggestion to yourself, can you try not to use carriage returns after every few words since it does make it a little hard to read having to scroll so much.

Im going to lock this topic to prevent any more "unfriendly" talk. If you wish to continue, feel free to start another topic.
