Been trying to get this working for 4 days now with limited success,
As in one of the post I have read on phpmyadmin when I go to http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin all I get is a directory list. I have tried adding index.php to that and now only 404 error. I have followed 3 different tutorials and still can,t get the thing to work.
I know php is working under the server as I can get the PHP admin pages
any suggestions please as I am on the verge of giving up, I have even uninstalled and re installed php5, mysql5 and phpmyadmin. I know I could try ver 4 of the software but it seems a backwards step.
Thanks in advance,, old aged newbie |

phpMyAdmin should have come with an index.php.
Please re-download from phpmyadmin.net. |

That sounds pretty self-explanatory. :)
If you're running Windows, this is really strange.
However, if you're running *nix, you need to chmod your phpmyadmin dir to allow writing files. _________________ Stephen

Running windows xp. If I got to the dir the index file is there , but when I go there with the browser to start phpmyadmin its not.
Looks like I will just delete the lot and start again
Thanks for your replies all |

The phpMyAdmin tutorial works. You need to follow it exactly. Use one of the download links provided and use that version. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Hi I am sorry about this I have followed the tutorials but still cannot past phpadmin displaying as just a directory listing. I am now trying to set it up going down a slightly different route, by using the phpmyadmin set up web interface screen. this seems to configure OK, however as soon as I go back to httP://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin all I get is the directory listing again, with set up and no index file. I know I am being a little bit dense somewhere along the line, but these pages are my only help as I live on a remote Scottish island, so no one else to ask or take a look at the code.
Thanks

If it is not working you have not followed the tutorial correctly. Hundreds of people have followed it and it has worked for them. Follow it again WORD FOR WORD following the diagrams. If at any point you dont see on your screen the same as in the diagram, go back and find out why. It will only be your mistake, not the tutorials.
Add me on msn if you wish. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Hi Thanks for that and yep I know your tutorials are good and I am following them, I know I must be making a mistake somewhere I just can,t find out where. I have deleted and re installed phpmyadmin 4 times and as far as I can tell followed the tutorial. Its not difficult to follow, well it might be for me as I don,t seem to get the right out come. I know php is working as I have checked with the info page
mysql is working as I have logged in using the command line interface.
getting to the stage where I have down loaded 2 other php admin interfaces to see if I make the same mistake on them.
I must nearly be there getting the index page but displayed as a directory.
I will struggle on It will work eventually
thanks again |

$cfg['blowfish_secret'] = '***';
/**

$i = 0;
// The $cfg['Servers'] array starts with $cfg['Servers'][1]. Do not use
// $cfg['Servers'][0]. You can disable a server config entry by setting host

// (including $i incrementation) serveral times. There is no need to define

$i++;
$cfg['Servers'][$i]['host'] = 'localhost'; // MySQL hostname or IP address

We don't need the config file because we know thats not the problem. Not seeing an index file is the problem and has nothing to do with the config file.
If you followed the tutorial word for word you would see the phpMyAdmin login page.
I suggest you do this:
1. Delete everything associated with phpMyAdmin.
2. Get the tutorial and follow it word for word using the EXACT files it tells you to download on the tutorial. These will be at the top of the page. Use them, and no others.
3. Follow the tutorial WORD FOR WORD, dont do anything it doesnt tell you and do everything it does tell you. Don't assume anything should be different.
4. Go to the index files page and add "index.php" (without the speechmarks) and click ok, then click the restart button to apply the changes.
5. Try browsing to the phpmyadmin directory again and, if you followed it perfectly, it WILL work.
Failing that, add me on msn, msn@abyssunderground.co.uk and we might be able to set up a remote desktop connection so I can do it for you. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

I have followed the tutorial word for word each time. I know its not your tutorial at fault as you say its been followed hundreds of times. I have deleted all my phpmyadmin files and reinstalled with the ver form the link on your site. I have again followed the tutorial word for word and am still only getting the dir listing displayed in IE. if I browse and try and open the index.php the config.inc opens in word pad.
I am honestly not thick, I have followed everything word for word as you can see in the config.inc above. I have renamed the folder in the for phpmyadmin.. to just phpmyadmin. I have copied the config.default.inc up into the htdocs folder. I have edited it there using, word pad. saved it to the same file. I then browse with my browser to http://127.0.0.1/phpmyadmin and I get the directory listing.
INDEX of phpmyadmin/
followed by
../
check_lang.php
convercfg.pl
create-release.sh
create_tables.sql
create_tables_mysql 4 1 2 +.sql
decode_bug.php
find_unused_messages.sh
remove_control_m.sh
setup.php ( I can run this which gives me a limited graphic interface.)
upgrade.pl
upgrade_tables_mysql 4 1 2+.sql.
under this I have the normal powered by abyss web server x 2
I know mysql is running as I can create databases by the command line interface and have done so.
I know php is running as I have tested a php page.
The PC server is not wired into the network or Internet as yet as I thought It would be easier to work on it next to me than sat in the loft.
Many many thanks for your help, but this thing is just getting on top of me as it looks and seems so simple to set up and I can,t get it to work :( |

Those are NOT the contents of phpmyadmin.
They are the contents of phpmyadmin/scripts.
You have setup phpmyadmin alias to the wrong directory in your console. |

phpmyadmin -error

Thank you very much moxxnixx and thanks aybssunderground for you help and great tutorials.
Have ordered a few php, msql books of amozon to read a little deeper, so I might not have to be such a pain in future.

Which extention errors are you getting ?
To enable extentions open your php.ini file and see if the said extentions are enabled, for example : mbstring is a popular extention error
Open : php.ini
Find :
Code: | ;extension=php_mbstring.dll |
And remove the ; (Semi Colon)
Code: | extension=php_mbstring.dll |
Now the extention mbstring is enabled so save and upload.
If you tell use which extentions your having problems with, we can give you a better example etc...

Hi Marty, thanks for the reply, I have checked the mb string.dll its ok
what I am getting is cannot load mysql extension, I have checked in the php.ini that it has the semi colon removed as per the FAQ on abyss-underground also the extension_dir = "ext" which was set to c:/PHP/ext but now changed to just "ext"
first of my book arrived today php for dummies which seems to fit me very well at the moment
Added later same day
I found this on a web site, before I give it a go any comments
I searched the solution to the problem all over and all did not work. Now finally I found the correct answer.
1. Get ZIPPED version of PHP for windows from www.php.net
2. Extract the contents.
3. Find php_mysql.dll in EXT folder.
4. Copy and paste it in C:WINNT/SYSTEM32
5. Modify php.ini in C:WINNT as below.
extension_dir = "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32"
extension=php_mysql.dll
nope nothin only the same fault
I also tried this from the My SQL site forums
I have discovered how to fix this.
You need to have the libmysql.dll and php_mysql.dll/mysql.so.
Go into the windows control panel and find system, open it and click advanced.
Now click Environment Variables.
Now for the part you need to do:
Click 'new' under system variables, the name of it is
PHPRC
The value is where you installed php, for example, I installed it into C:\PHP, so the value was
C:\PHP
NO joy just the same error page |

It's great to see that you got it working with help from fellow communers. I was going to ask if you had even created a configuartion file see as though as far as I could see you hadn't. You have obviously!
May I also add that the blue mod text is becoming somewhat common! lol It's great too see. ^.^ |

I got the blue bold text idea from another forum. It makes it obvious a mod decision has been made on a particular post. :-) Glad you like the idea too. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)
