Hey everyone. I'm new to Abyss and so far have it running flawlessly. My problem is with two things. Both of these I've already searched the forum for but didnt come across anything too helpfull for me to grasp.

1) I have a domain name at Godaddy.com. How can I get that name to recognize my IP address without forwarding the domain? I know I need DNS or whatnot but I was wondering about all my options and if I can create my own DNS somehow.

2) I am trying to set up and FTP for my server so myself and my buddy can interact with our respective pages on the server. Can anyone offer any software suggestions and advice to get this up and running?

Thank you guys very much and Abyss is by far the best server I have come across.

i use godaddy for my domain to so i will walk you through it:

1. login
2. go to my account
3. click manage domains
4. check the box in front of your domain name and then click your domain name
5. go to total dns control at the bottom right hand corner and click the plus
6. click Total DNS Control And MX Records
7. you'll see A (Host) at the top and under that host click edit put your ip click continue then update

and now that should be setup

as for ftp search google for a free ftp server

yea filezilla is pretty good for FTP. I had a few problems with some FTP clients not being able to properly access it a few times, but those problems just sorta came and went on their own.

Alright. Thanks again everyone for your help. One last question.

When I set up different sites on different ports how do I access them through my IP? ip:port?

Alright, I ran into a problem. My second site which is located on port 81 is not working.

http://68.43.5.172:81

I configured my router to my Trigger and Public ports for 81 as well. Both TCP. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

You should use port forwarding not port triggering.

I dont think my router has port forwarding. I have a Virtual Server section that has a Mapping Ports section. Also a Static Routing section. Do you have a messanger I can contact you on by any chance?

Thanks again for the help.

Okay so then in the 'Mapping Ports' section I put '81'. Now I am clueless as to what to put for the 'Server IP' next to the section.

I have to choose the last digit in 192.168.1.x

I tried the same digit for my first website but it still has not worked. I still can access my site through http://127.0.0.1:81/ but when I type in my ip with the port its still a no go. How can I find out my server IP so I can put in the correct last digit?

The server ip is the ip of your computer on the network. Go to start, run, type cmd and hit enter. Then type ipconfig and hit enter. The "IP Address: 192.168.x.x" is the IP you should use.

Go to www.portforward.com and find your router for detailed instructions on doing it.

Okay, new problem. heh

Well all those questions I asked in my earlier posts we for me setting up the server on my main computer. Just recently I built my server and got all the programs and everything pretty much configured.

My problem is on my server pc when I put in http://127.0.0.1 my page shows up, but on my main pc I put that in and it doesnt display. I take it this is a problem with my router? My port is forwarded to the default port already aswell (80).

Any tips?

on your main pc you should connect to it through external ip:port not the internal ip internal ip is the router ip if you want to know you external ip go to www.whatismyip.com or www.ipchicken.com

wait let me get this straight. you are attempting to connect to the server from a remote computer on your network using the ip 127.0.0.1? if so, I can easily see your problem. 127.0.0.1 is the local host, which if you typed into the remote computer it would try and find a http host on itself, not the server. You need to find the network address to the server (it shuld be something like 192.168.x.x or something like 10.x.x.xm but most likely the 192 one) Then, you shuld be able to access the server from the remote computer.

Thats why I like to use localhost instead of 127.0.0.1 when I can...less confusing, and easier to remember than numbers :D

Thanks madman. When I put in the 192 one my page still didnt come up. Is there a something wrong with the way I set up my server on my other IP? lol

Everything is on and working as far as abyss goes. My router is configured to my knowledge correctly with the correct port forwarded.

Also to bp, I did try connecting to my external IP. It still is not working but I am using the same ports I forwarded when I had abyss on my main pc. Still no go.

127.0.0.1, 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 168.x.x.x will NOT allow you access outside your local network.

I recentyly switched to using a router after a couple of years witha USB modem. Much better, but a few quirks compared with the previous arrangement. I have the router configured to port forward 80, 21 etc. to 10.0.0.3, which is the PC running Abyss. External sites can now access my domain IP address ww.xx.yy.zz to pick up the web pages, but my PC's on the local network can no longer do so. They need to reference 10.0.0.3 explicitly. No big deal, and I assumed this was just a consequence of the NAT performed by the router.

Chris

Thats because your router/modem does not support loopback. There is nothing you can do about this.

I respond, not as an expert, but as someone who has fumbled through installing a router fairly recently.

If you are running a web server behind a router which performs NAT then you need to tell it that traffic for the port on which you run your webserver (normally 80) is to be directed to the IP address of the PC on which your webserver is located. How do you know what that is? Run ipconfig on the PC in question. There is a gotcha lurking here. If you have several PC's on the LAN, and they are set up to get their IP addresses from a gateway (the router's DHCP) then unless they are permanently on there is a risk that this IP address may vary. I have found it safer to assign a fixed IP address to the Abyss PC, outside the user assigned DHCP range in the router, and then port forward 80 to that IP address.

This enables the outside world to 'enjoy' my photo albums via http://edmxtech.co.uk/photos/ but if I want to view them myself from a PC on the LAN then, as mentioned in an earlier post, I have to use http://IP_Address_of_Abyss_PC/photos/

Regards
Chris

Maybe another explanation might help...

Each computer hooked up to your router has its own IP address (probably starts with 192.168.xxx.xxx). These are "internal" IP addresses.
Each computer shares your internet connection, which has an external IP address. (You can see your external IP address in my sig picture below.)

There are many ways to access the server from the server... localhost, 127.0.0.1, 192.168.xxx.xxx (its internal IP address). If you have port forwarding properly set up, you can also access the server through your external IP address - like mine (http://24.145.130.71).

To access the server from another computer hooked up to your router, type in the server's internal IP address.

To find the server's internal IP address, type "ipconfig" at a command prompt if running Win2000/XP, or "winipcfg" for Win95/98.

Okay guys, I'm back. :)

My problem this time is setting up a domain with the info above that has a port number trailing it. For example, my-ip:81. I enter it in the Total DNS Control area and it says invalid data. Any ideas on how I can set up my other ported sites with domains?

Are you using Abyss X2? If that's the case, you can host any number of domains with one IP address on port 80. X2 checks the site you're looking for against its list of hosted sites and returns the appropriate information.

I assume you're using X1 and want to host multiple domains that you purchased.
The way most people do this is to use an IFRAME in their HTML. It's called cloaking or masking a domain. Check if your domain provider allows you to do this. (The disadvantages are that the Title of your pages and the address bar remain static for the entire domain.)

An example of domain cloaking/forwarding --> http://www.chat-hctech.co.nr/ (look at the HTML source)

No, I have X2. How can I set the way your talking about up?

My sites

port: 80 www.website.com

port: 81 www.website.com

I would prefer not cloaking/masking these.

So you have two separate domains you want to host on the same computer?

If so, set both up on port 80. This is what I did here:

Each host (actually there are several more) runs on port 80.
Abyss knows when you're requesting information from http://calvarybucyrus.org and http://calvarybaptist.homedns.org. Look at the Host HTTP header you send with every web request.

Just point all domains you're hosting to your IP address.
With all domains on port 80, it makes port forwarding much easier to deal with :).
