For any people in the UK out there looking for a cheap UPS, your day has come. eBuyer are selling this one:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/77131

Belkin Superior Series Ups 500va With Usb Serial Interface - £24.99 inc VAT

It will power a server up to around 325watts. It will last 7-12 minutes depending on the load. Most desktop pc's used as servers are 100-200watts anyway.

I have one of these and it works a treat. It lasts 30 minutes powering a 17" TFT (30watts) and my other slightly bigger 650va runs my pc for 25 minutes (110watts).

Enjoy ;-)

Not bad, although they've been down as far as £17.95 on Ebuyer before, which was when I purchased mine... Haven't had to test how long my system runs for on it yet, just carried me through a few glitches and brown outs my area of the Midlands is prone to...

Yeah that was a good offer at the time, I bought my 500va at that price too. It lasts 15 minutes with a 130w load which isnt too bad. Its taken me through some brownouts too. No blackouts yet.

well, the idea behind a UPS, is that you shut down your computer once it goes to reserve power to prevent it from being totally cut and having the hard drives crash(corruption/data loss/power surge)

I'd highly suggest not keep running it, unless otherwize noted of brown outs.

Or you'll just set up your system to automatically restart when the power comes back. If my power goes out and comes back, my server will automatically restart, execute the web server, FTP server and IRC server and update the DNS records if the IP address has changed.

The point of the UPS on a server is for it to last as long as possible, then when the battery is getting low and the power isnt back on, it will then shut the PC down. Unfortunately cheaper models do no have an auto restart feature so you must do it yourself.
