|
|
I am running 3 sites. Two of them work fine, but on the third one the index.htm grows in file size with every hit. When I check the HTML, it is listing the IP address, date and time of every hit on the site and therefore causing the index.htp page to increase in size. Here's an example of what gets added to the bottom of the HTML:
12.149.100.21 - - [02/Jul/2006:18:41:24 -0400] "GET /Buttons/ClassReadingList_Over.gif HTTP/1.1" 200 4405 "" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;)"
192.168.1.101 - - [02/Jul/2006:18:51:43 -0400] "GET / HTTP/1.1" 200 9210 "" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)"
192.168.1.101 - - [02/Jul/2006:18:51:43 -0400] "GET /animate.js HTTP/1.1" 304 0 "http://www.performersstudioworkshop.com/" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 7.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 2.0.50727)"
This database keeps growing and growing to a point where the index.htm file starts loading slowly.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on here? _________________ Mike Guy |

I fixed my own problem. I set up everything in ABYSS for this site the same way it is set up on my other two sites. It seems that I had it set up in a way that was allowing it to log every hit and posting it at the bottom of the index.htm file. PROBLEM SOLVED. _________________ Mike Guy |

Hi there, and welcome to the forums!
I'm curious how you got the raw logfile into your HTML page.
Could you please explain how this happened? _________________ Stephen

He must have set the log file to be his index.html page. Only explanation. _________________ Andy (AbyssUnderground) (previously The Inquisitor)

Well it seems that the way I had my ABYSS X2 web server set for this page allowed this. I had the log file in the console (Logging) set to htdocs . . . Index.htm. I also had the directory listing type set to "From Script". When I changed these, my problem went away. _________________ Mike Guy |

Randy: I didn't see your response earlier, but you are absolutely right. I had a user accessable CGI file on my site and was told that I needed to do this to make it work. Bad advice. I live and learn. You could have saved me a lot of work if I had checked here first. Next time I run into a problem, I will check here first. _________________ Mike Guy |

Ooops, I'm sorry that I referred to you as Randy earlier. My bad.
Can I set up a separate log file under another name and set my log file to that? I'm new to "home based" web serving. _________________ Mike Guy |

Andy:
I need some website advice. If you visit www.PerformersStudioWorkshop.com you will note that I have a public side of the site and a Student (Password Protected [Java Script]) side of the site. The problem is that once I give a password to a student and they can get to the Student side of the site, they save the URL to their favorites and can link to the student side without going through the password.
Is there a way to totally protect the student side of the site so if you link directly to the URL you have to enter your password to gain access? _________________ Mike Guy |

What if I don't have the IP address of everyone who has a Password? _________________ Mike Guy |

Tim:
Thanks. I now have the student side of the site totally password protected.
Next Question: Is it possible to monitor which students actually log on to the student side of the site? I would like to monitor this by username rather than by IP address. Thanks _________________ Mike Guy |

This one's easy.
Here's a snippet from my logfile when I'm visiting a password-protected page. Stephen is my username.
Quote: | 127.0.0.1 - Stephen [04/Jul/2006:20:39:57 -0400] "GET /cake/index.htm HTTP/1.1" 200 372 "" "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; ...)" |

Quick question...
Do you have Perl and/or PHP installed for your server?

I guess I need to read "ABYSS For The Complete Dummy" but I'm not even sure where I can find the logfile on my computer. I do have Perl and PHP both installed. What file is the snippet you posted from? And where might I find a similar file on my server? _________________ Mike Guy |

This is easy to find. It's probably named access.log. You can search your hard drive for it.
I'm assuming you keep three separate logfiles for your three different sites. Maybe they're all conglomerated into one.
Either way, here's how you find out. Goto the console: http://127.0.0.1:9999/.
Click "configure" on one of the hosts in the table. Click on the option named "Logging". Then you'll see "Log file".
Did this help you find it?
BTW, I'll be back to the forums probably on Thursday night. Someone else should be able to help in the meantime. _________________ Stephen
