For those of you that use Uptime-Project.net, there is a group for people that use abyss webserver:

Name: webservers
password: thisisthebest

You have to register for the project, then when you have logged in, you need to go on to 'My Profile' and about half way down on the left there is a link called 'join league', when you have clicked on this, you need to select 'Webservers*' from the list and put in the password that is above.

You then should get a confromatio e-mail confirming your membership to the league, when you have confimed your membership to the league, you then will see your username and the uptime statistics on http://Webservers.league.uptime-project.net/

I would but my pc will only select method 1, maximum uptime of 49 days. My server is on 45 days at the moment and will soon beat that...

My main server is on 120 days, glad I don't have that problem.
And I have two other computers on 40ish days. (After a power failure.)

I don't get them often, I had a ~100 day uptime before the last one.

Ive just tried uptime-project again and it was very slow. Ive just emailed a friend to see if he can make us our own uptime project system that just the members of this forum can use etc.

I wouldnt get your hopes up just yet, he hasnt agreed to take on the project so far.

I thought it would make it faster and easier for just us to have our own mini project. If he takes the project on he will be designing the server (for me) and the client (for you) programs.

Anyone else think this is a good idea?

I think you've missed the point to be honest.
The idea being to compare yourself to other leagues/users.

And I don't know about other people, but I wouldn't really trust something so unknown on a machine who's stability I rely on.

Put it this way. You know me more than the people that run the uptime project yet you would trust their software more than mine?

I havent missed the point, I understand its against other people but we should do it around our own community, not with any man and his dog to join in with.

It was my idea, and i wanted to prove that computers running abyss and any os are more stable than those running Apache. 90% of the servers on uptime-project are running Apache and 2% running Abyss and 8% running other webserver software.

I thought i might be good publicity for Aprelium and Abyss.

I run apache, and my uptime is currently the best. (Just trying to prove that it doesn't really mean anything.)

Well you can see what my servers uptime is in my sig.

Craig, what do you think about my idea of our own uptime project for the abyss community?

Well the idea was that we have our own uptime contest between abyss users. Its not so much abyss uptime its server uptime. My friend has agreed to the project but he said he isnt in the mood for programming at the moment as he is busy with other things.

He will start as soon as he can he said.

If we had our own project,

1) Who would check the servers to make sure they are running abyss.
2) Whos server would we use?
3) Who would be responsible for the project?

I started this, and i would like to get the credit for it, if there is any. I might sound a bit oversensitive about it, but i have started many things on the net, and people have taken them over, and i dont get any credit for them.

Not sure how that could be done. I could make it so the server does it but I was told that all members have to be manually added, which makes it difficult. It would have to be the person putting the new user onto the system. Id like it to be automated but my friend doesnt have the skills to do this sort of thing.

Also, the data transmission would be unencrypted, which is no biggie because its not "sensetive" data. Its only a username and password, and the uptime and OS data.

EDIT: I just thought. I could make a PHP register form to automatically add new users and passwords :-) That shouldnt be too hard as each users data would be in a seperate file/folder.

About whose server to use. Ill volunteer mine. My uptime has been 100% for the last 2 1/2 months ( http://www.mralert.com/stats/3759/ ) and has been around 100% for all the time before that. Even if the server is down, it doesnt matter. The client will simply wait until the next time it can connect.

You can be responsible for the project if you like but obviously I'd have to manage the server side of it (if its on my server). The rest is yours.

I know what your saying, but would we be able to achieve the same results using a php script?

EDIT: the whole thing being a php script

I doubt it. It means people have to set up a cron (scheduled task) and this can be irritating. Then there is the issue of people being able to hack it by changing the php script. A compiled delphi/c++ program is a lot more difficult to hack, especially for the simple minded.

We could set it up, so they have to register their domain name, then when the script tries to connect to update, the server does a reverse lookup and finds out wether that ip address is associoated with the registered domain.

So in thery, it will verify:
First => Username + domain
Second => Username + password

Not all domains can be reverse looked up (according to the person making this client and server). But its a good theory. Maybe someone can correct me on that reverse lookup bit.

Im trying to think of a way to use redundancy, eg if the main server is down look for a second but its hard to think how it would be done without hard coding it into the client.

Hard coding it into the client is the only way.

Client:
1) If server 1 does not respond in 10 seconds connect to server 2, if server 2 does not respond, alert user and wait 10 mins.

Server:
1) mirror each other every 10 mins, and can be mirrored upon request, incase of schedualed downtime.

Brackets don't mean "Ignore enclosed text"; you've totally missed the point.

I also don't see why in gods name you are so persistant in making your own. Why recreate something that allready exists?
I don't mind joining your league, since I don't have one, but I see no point in creating a new site/system.
But whatever tickles your pickle, to coin a phrase.

How would the client know the two servers to start with? Get the user to manually enter them? Possibility.

We want to create our own for several reasons (here are mine):

1. uptime-project.net is slow, took me 10 seconds to load the homepage and over 2 minutes to load the 12 avatars that show the uptime etc.

2. having our own means not every man and his dog joins. It makes it so the people in the abyss community have a competition against each other

3. its a challenge. As is everything thats new. MonkeyNation, its like the games you make. You make your own even though someone else has probably made something similar.

We arent starting a flamewar. A flamewar is insults to eachother. We havent done that and I dont intend to.

But anyway, if MonkeyNation doesnt want to join this new project thats fine, but other people might like the idea.

Lets wait and see if anyone else likes the idea as well.

I've just voiced my opinion on it, who am I to tell you not to? You can do whatever you please.
Also, I've tried to make my game as a bugfix for others in it's genre, but with obvious differences and new features. I try as best I can to practice what I preach.
