I have set up the Abyss Free web-server with complete success, but for one irritating problem.

I have used Picasas to produce a file of Images I use on my web-page, in four folders. I click the thumbnail and the larger image appears fine in the Abyss system folder and when I click the image to save image location, Abyss reports my internal LAN I/P as 192. xxx.xxx.xxx. This is correct, but not what I want.

However I want to have it report my external Wan I/P as 82.xxx.xxx.xxx to allow the images to be sent to a board.

1) Is there a simple way to make Abyss report my external address when I right click the image? If I change the URL to the external I/P address leaving the rest as it is, it works fine. The images post correctly.

2) I do find the upload times slow... is that a standard issue for images of 40 to 100kb? I realize that net conditions and other factors are in play here, and that leads me to ask if the payed for version is any faster than the free package?

And a computer savvy friend has told me he can ping me... I am not transparent on the net. Is there a simple cure for this??

My system is a XP3200 IGB RAM. Window XP with all packs installed. Zoom X4 adsl modem and a Net-Lynx extender to network my two computers. I have 512 K download and 256k upload connections. I run McAfee AV, BOclean Trojan Horse scanner running behind McAfee. Sygate Personal Firewall, and Webroot Antispyware package.

Any assistance would be appreciated here.

Tom.

What exactly are you trying to do?
Add an imageshack-like "Upload to x.x.x.x" to the context menu? You lost me, or its too early :S

And the time it takes you to upload is only affected by your connection to the internet or intranet.

Hello,

Yes, like image stores I want to return the OUTSIDE access URL to the images on my Abyss server.

When I use Firefox to right click the full size image on display and select Copy Image Location, it returns my INSIDE LAN address:
http://192.xxx.xxx.1/k3/images/ay02.jpg etc.

However that is not accessible to anyone outside my LAN! I can see it on any of my networked computers on the bulletin board, but no one else does.

What I want and need is the action of right clicking the image to return my OUTSIDE WAN I/P address:
http://82.xxx.xxx.xxx/k3/images/ay02.jpg

I can do this manually by changing the required part of the URL each time, but it is tedious and prone to making errors! For example putting the odd comma for stops between the number groups in the URLs etc. AND it means that all the images must be renamed to give a serial sequence of numbers, so in the above URL, the end is ay03.jpg; ay04.jpg and so on. I dont want to do this.

I hope I have made myself clear now?

I am new to this and learning a lot very quickly.

Tom.

Ahh, copy imge location.
Well firstly, I take it your modem/router doesn't support loopback. (You dont see your site if you try to access your wan IP.)
You'll need to goto (On a standard windows XP installation.)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and open a file entitled "hosts" with a text editor such as notepad.
Then, on a new line aside from any other entrys that may be in there, add "192.168.1.1 62.249.233.57" where 192.168.1.1 is your lan ip and 62.249.233.57 is your wan ip and hit save.
If you look at the folder after saving and you see hosts.txt, then you'll have to delete the old hosts file (Just "hosts") and rename hosts.txt to hosts.

Yes, you are correct, I do not see my site when I try to access my pages using my WAN address.

Now before I modify anything I need to know the following. Is this the correct place where I type in my LAN WAN IP's??

_______________________
# The #BEGIN_ and #END_ALTERNATE keywords allow multiple #INCLUDE
# statements to be grouped together. Any single successful include
# will cause the group to succeed.
#
# Finally, non-printing characters can be embedded in mappings by
# first surrounding the NetBIOS name in quotations, then using the
# \0xnn notation to specify a hex value for a non-printing character.
#
# The following example illustrates all of these extensions:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino #PRE #DOM:networking #net group's DC
# 102.54.94.102 "appname \0x14" #special app server
# 102.54.94.123 popular #PRE #source server
# 102.54.94.117 localsrv #PRE #needed for the include
#
# #BEGIN_ALTERNATE
# #INCLUDE \\localsrv\public\lmhosts
# #INCLUDE \\rhino\public\lmhosts
# #END_ALTERNATE
#
# In the above example, the "appname" server contains a special
# character in its name, the "popular" and "localsrv" server names are
# preloaded, and the "rhino" server name is specified so it can be used
# to later #INCLUDE a centrally maintained lmhosts file if the "localsrv"
# system is unavailable.
#
# Note that the whole file is parsed including comments on each lookup,
# so keeping the number of comments to a minimum will improve performance.
# Therefore it is not advisable to simply add lmhosts file entries onto the
# end of this file.
______________________________

Do I type in my date to THIS field above in notepad or elsewhere?? Save and rename?

I do not want to screw this up due to my lack of knowledge!

Thanks for all you have done... it seems I may be on the winning trail at last. Please note: assume I know NOTHING about this process and you will be entirely correct! Line by line instructions are needed. Such input will not superflous information to an experianced operator, which I am NOT! I am a novice here! Thanks.

Smiles...

Nope, that doesnt look like it to me :S
This is the header to the file.
Code:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server
#       38.25.63.10     x.acme.com              # x client host

Assuming you are on windows XP (Let me know otherwise.) open a new notepad window, hit file -> open -> Put "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" in for file name, and hit open.
Scroll to the bottom of the file (Could be big, could be small.) and hit enter for a new line, and add "192.168.1.1 62.249.233.57", replacing 192.168.1.1 with you're computers lan ip, and 62.249.233.57 with the address you want to point to it, so putting "127.0.0.1 aprelium.com" would make aprelium.com show any web server running on the computer your using, although it isnt really on aprelium.com.

Okay...

I have followed your suggested additions, stored the two addresses as you suggest, and I still see the INTERNAL I/P given on the images! Grrrr! :-)

I have copied the notepad file in part at the bottom of the page to show what I did and what I see when I have closed and reopened the Notepad file. It is the page you sent above... I have cut off the top to save space. This is the post save view by the way....

Where the x's are the correct numbers involved.
Should I have added a # sign before the series of numbers? I did leave a space between the two series... I assume that is correct?

Thats not the file you're after unless they changed it and didnt make an update for it. If thats what notepad opens when you type that path in then im lost :S
Im sure someone else here has XP home to try, but I dont have a copy I can get ahold of to try. Google hosts files and see what you can find, I cant really help you further, to my knowlage that was a standard template that comes with all windows OSes since '95. (Just in different places pre XP.)

Okay... Thanks for your efforts.

I accessed this file:- C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc

It is what you said other than a swap in the order of drivers and etc. It would not find a file in the order you suggested.

I closed the notepad file and reopened it. This is the entire file! I am sure I got the correct one! Can you confirm it is the one you expected me to enter and change?

Tom.

I dont think so, but my OS is outdated, its the first release of windows xp pro, and im not sure that windows update updates absolutley everything, so it could well be.
Open every file in that folder and have a look around (It could be marked as a hidden file or system file so youll have to enable those options in folder options too.)

A lil bit of a stab in the dark here, but lets try CREATING a hosts file.
Open a blank new notepad window, insert...
#
192.168.1.1 62.249.233.57

Replacing the 2 ip addresses above.
Then hit File -> save as -> "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts" WITH the speech marks.

Ninja edit: It can take to 10 minutes to take effect sometimes (Not sure why.)

Hello again,

I have made and saved a file *exactly* as you suggested. It is a 1 k file installed.

After doing so, I waited a long time, tried and it still returned my internal address so rebooted the computer, and waited again, all to no avail. It still boots to my internal LAN address!! Grrrrr!

I did check and look to be sure it has saved my new file in where I wanted it to be, and indeed, it is there... all of it! It seems like a computer conspiracy is in place based in my computer!

This is so frustrating! I'm sure it is for you my unknown Computer Meister as it is for me as well.

I smile... but want to do harm to my unresponsive computer! :-)

Any more ideas will be welcome! I will try anything!

Tom.

MonkeyNation,

"hosts" file maps host names (domain names) to IP addresses. It cannot map IP addresses to other IP addresses.
By the way, changes made to "hosts" file take effect immediately.

its impossible if your router doesnt support loopback, I have the same problem as you, what router do you use? I use a Belkin 4-Port Cable/DSL Router. Speaking of routers, does anyone have a router that HAS LOOPBACK ENABLED?

Suprisingly few routers do. If you want any hope for a home network and a server in most cases you simply need two network cards in your server. Run the modem straight to the in one of the NICs hook the router to the other NIC. If you have winxp run "Set up a home or small office network" located in the network connections. You'll be up and running in no time.
