Has anyone ever come accross this error or an error similar to this?

Quote:
Windows Installer cannot install because the windows installer cannot be initialised. Please download and install the lastest version of the windows installer before retrying.

This tickled me but also p****d me off. I now have to format and reinstall windows on my laptop :-(

I've had this error before, as far as I remember it was repairable, although a pain in the arse to do so...

Have you updated to the Windows Installer 3.1? If not, download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en
This may solve your problem if you have not already updated to v3.1!

Hope this helps!

FYI, I NEVER install updates, thats what caused this problem in the first place. I hate windows, the only reason I use it is because any program you buy works with it.

(BTW, that wasnt meant to sound rude!)

Windows Updates? Whats that?
Oh, that thing in my tray that screams how it wants to destory my computer.
No thanks.

BTW, a windows update wouldn't have fixed that, or prevented that.
To go along with the post in that thread, IE is filled with holes. One of the many is the ability to download files to your computer without your knowladage.

I've been discussing this with other people, routers are not perfect. Say you launch IE, get some crap on your comp and it runs, it could the OPEN port that IE uses for normal internet browsing and do some real bad stuff, even though you have a router that blocks incomming requests. (FYI, this is how GotoMyPC works, by not having you forward any ports, and still be able to control your PC remotly.)
Now, granted they might have patched this in IE 7, but I'm running sp2 and went to a site that tested that vulenerabilty. Still works on IE (it downloaded the firefox install to C:\), failed on Firefox.

Also, since its starting up, you can use a program called Startup. Easiest startup editor, ever (you have probably fixed it by now, but just in case anyone else wants to know).

Judge by the facts, not your opinions. That saying goes with...

Quote:
Don't judge a book by its cover.

Just because it looks helpful, does not mean it is.
Some spyware removal companies will removal a certain spyware for free, then put thier own on and make you pay to remove it. Or when you install the anti-spyware software itll put its own spyware on and when you run a scan itll say "X Spyware detected, pay $9.99 to have it removed now".

Sh1t, I think I start an information wiki...

The computer is unable to restart because it was not restarted. Please restart and try again

Thats weird:S

Windows XP's favourite is after a format:

Quote:
Windows cannot find any drivers for your modem, would you like windows to search the internet for a suitable driver?

... ... now you see my point at how dumb windows is.

Obviously not, Linux is 1000 times better than windows. You cant even click on an icon without getting a stupid popup square with 'This is blardy blardy blar and does blardy blardy blar' and you cant even turn them off.

ooh, you know what really annoys me. The annoying 'Pop!' sound when you get a bubble by the clock. Drives me nuts. Thankfully you CAN turn this one off...

Windows can work great, if you just know how to configure it.
People complain about windows sucking etc, but its actually not all that bad, some of the errors are a little retarded; given, but they can be sorted via searching the interweb.

And you can modify some of the windows errors if you know what you're doing, if they get to you that much.

I know it is, I use windows 100% of the time but Linux is so much better. I got so annoyed last week I actually downloaded 6 different distros of linux to try out. I never managed to burn any to cd so I only tried RedHat 9 which I already had on cd.

Server 2k3 enterprise ed. can be just as stable, if you treat it right.

A family member (Linux/Unix Guru) introduced me to Linux when I was 12. I started with Knoppix, Mandrake, Debian then RedHat. I've stuck with RedHat ever since!! How about you lot? How did you find out about Linux? Just wondering :-)

Ive had a windows box since I was 3(-ish), and I had a Dos box before that, but was too young to use it, and the windows 3.1 GUI was a lot better. (Well, it actually HAD a GUI.)
I only got a copy of linux just over a year ago, when someone gave me one, and as I have a few OSless PCs lying around I decided to put it on one.
I prefer windows to it still, but probably because Ive had so much more experience with the windows family.
