... And maybe they should try reading the sticky topic in the Networking section, cunningly titled "Can't view your website? Want a domain name? Look here!"

When they say remotely, I'm willing to bet they're just putting in their WAN IP while on their LAN and failing because of a router that doesn't support loopback, or they haven't opened the port on their router, both of which they could have found by reading before asking the same question for the millionth time.

Well said Anonymoose. We really should get together a bunch of people and make a proper guide on installing all aspects of Abyss Web Server and its components, e.g ASP and PHP etc and a solution to common problems such as loopback. I reckon it would save a lot of hassle and arguments that go on on the forum.

Unfortunately unless those solutions are then made into sticky topics on the forum, it won't make a damn bit of difference - and as this topic proves, even when there's a sticky topic with the exact title of the problem, people will happily open a new topic and make yet another "OMGAZBYSSDOEN@TWORK!" topic.

My solution would be to make the sign up page of the forum require people to read "Asking Questions the Smart Way", then pass a test based on it before being allowed to post ;)

lol, I was sad enough to read the entire guide and there were so extreamly excellent points on it so yes, I think there should be a link at the top of the forum or as you say, a questionaire to complete before being allowed to post :P

I think I might have to mirror it on my own website and only link it here so I can see how many people actually bother reading it :D

Not a bad idea. I just put a page counter on my site to see how many pages are being looked at. I tried my old stats script too but I couldnt get it to log properly. It takes about 3-5 seconds for a page to load because it is looking for their DNS. Not sure why it slows the page down so much.

Reverse DNS lookups are a huge performance hit on logging - most stats scripts for high traffic sites will give you the option of logging IP only then optionally doing lookups when using a log analyzer...

Ah, right. Ill just log the IP instead then. What I dont get is that on my pro hosting it worked fine, everything was instant...

Your pro hosted site would probably have access to a caching DNS server for local high speed lookups, if not, it still has infinitely more bandwidth than the measly 256kbps upstream we get in the UK, so the effect of a lookup would be considerably less.

Yeah, I never thought of that *kicks self*. Never-the-less, IP will work just fine. Infact I dont even need that, just the date, time and referrer would do...

Mr. Anonymoose, NO, you are wrong 100%. and you'll lose you bet and that is for sure. No I am not putting in my WAN IP while I am on LAN and failing because of a router that doesn't support loopback. Also, NO YOU ARE WRONG: I have opened the port on my router.

Why do't you respond kindly and just say that this is not the right forum for my question.

So where are you trying to access your console from? Which port did you open on your router?
